Tmj ankylosis

Ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint is the intracapsular union of discondyle complex to the
articular surface, including fibrous adhesion to the bony union, that restricts the movement of mandible.

Ankylosis results in distressing conditions such as difficulty in mastication, impaired speech, poor oral
hygiene, facial disfigurement, difficulty in breathing and psychological distress.

Ankylosis results from various etiological causes, such as trauma, infection to tmj, local and systemic
inflammatory conditions, neoplasms etc. among all of the cases, trauma is the main etiology in most of
the conditions.

Bilateral ankylosis is most often attributed to the systemic conditions.
