Special Populations Philosophy

As a future teacher it is important to know and understand the many special populations that are

in our schools today. There are students that are gifted and talented, special education, English

Language Learners, and homeless students. Although this only is a few of the many special

population students in our schools. Teachers need to adapt to all their students needs and learn the

best way they can accommodate each student.

In my classroom I will embrace not only the culture of each of my students, but I will also gain an

understanding of each student’s abilities and needs. In doing this as a teacher I hope to inspire my

students to know that I want to see them be successful in their education career and for them to

know that although they may be different, we are all different in our own way.

Being able to embrace the diversity of students in a classroom can be challenging, those students

that are gifted and talented need to be challenged in many different aspects of their education.

Gifted and talented students can help other students in the classroom with a topic or area of study

that may be challenging. Special education students need to know that with accommodations and

help from teachers and peers that they can succeed in their education. Special education students

need encouragement and feedback about how they are doing and for them to know they can

succeed. English Language Learners need help to understand the lecture and material that is

provided to them daily. Students in the classroom can help English Language Learners in the

classroom by helping clarify the lecture. Homeless students need comfort and security in school.

Comfort and security can come from their peers and teachers.

With the many different special populations that exist in our schools today it is important for

teachers to understand each special population and know how to accommodate for each of the
special populations. Teachers need to be able to adapt their classrooms, and teaching styles so that

each student feels included and accommodated. Teachers should learn and grow just as much as

their students do. If teachers can get to know their students and their personalities and what works

best for them the students will succeed and feel that they can accomplish their dreams. Each student

is different in their own way and with the right support and accommodations provided can succeed

in their educational career.
