Suppose I want analyze a rectangular slab type raft 0f size 21mx16m using elastic mat model in

STAAD. The columns (4x3 = 12 Nos) are spaced @ 7m c/c in X direction & 8m c/c in Y direction.
The raft is supposed to be modeled using plate elements of size 0.25mx0.25m. The soil is loose
sand of SBC 60 KN/sqm. From Table 5.3 below, I take Modulus of sub grade reaction k s = 8
MN/m3 ( loose sand) for a plate of 30cmx30cm. Since my plate element size is 0.25mx0.25m, K p
= ks * x *y (fig:5.24) = 8* 0.25*0.25 = 0.5 MN/m3.

Kindly check the above calculation in the light of the article attached below and apprise me if I
can adopt this value for modeling the raft in STAAD.

Is it OK if I choose “Elastic Mat” option ?
