A Willa is freaking out. It seems like she’s seeing things, like a
dead body in her swimming pool; frantic messages on her walls; a
reflection that is not her own. It’s almost as if someone or
something is trying to send her a message.

Sixteen-year-old Leilani loves surfing and

her home in Hilo, on the Big Island of Hawaii.
B
But she’s an outsider – half white, half Hawaiian, and epileptic.
While Lei and her father are on a visit to Oahu, a global disaster
strikes. Due to a technology and power fail, Hawaii is cut off from
the world, and the islands revert to traditional ways of survival.

C Having barely escaped Desenna, Owen and Lilly are on their own
now, two of the three Altaneans on a journey to find Atlantis and
protect it from the selfish greed of their nemesis Paul and Project
Elysium. The secrets buried in the ice ahead have the power to
destroy, not only the Earth but also the bond between them. As
time grows short and darkness overtakes the planet, Owen must
face Paul’s greatest treachery yet.

New Year’s Eve ended but Mary, Kat and Lillia may not be
D
prepared for what is to come. After Rennie’s death, Kat and Lillia
try to put the pieces together of what happened to her. They both
blame themselves. If Lillia hadn’t left with Reeve... If Kat had only
stayed with Rennie... Things could have been
different. Now, they will never be the same.

E John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They
were young and in love, had a perfect little house and not a care in
the world. Then they brought Marley home, a wiggly yellow fur ball
of a puppy. Life would never be the same.

This has been described as ‘the best guide to Italy in English’. It

includes detailed information about history, churches, museums
and art galleries as well as some practical information about
hotels, restaurants, transportation and so on. There are suggested
tour routes, along with maps, town plans and illustrations.

The teenagers below want to buy a book. Decide which book would be most appropriate
for each person and write the corresponding letter in the box.

1. Emma is a nurse. She likes to read short stories during her meal breaks. She’s not
keen on action or crime stories, but prefers something lighter, especially
descriptions of people’s feelings and relationships.

2. Chris is interested in Geography and the natural world. He is very keen on

hurricanes and earthquakes, so he likes stories that involve fighting for survival.

3. Norbert is away from school on holiday. He doesn’t usually read much, but he’d like
something to help pass the time. He is fond of mystery and horror stories and
likes finding out about unusual people.

4. David is from New York. He will be an exchange student in Europe this semester.
He wants a practical book that will inform him about a European country and its way
of life. He wants a book that is well organised and informative because he is sure
to have some free time for sightseeing between classes.

5. Jessica is a reporter and she travels around Italy to cover stories quite often. She has
a long train journey tomorrow and she’d like a good Science Fiction story, possibly
about aliens and unrealistic creatures.
