Asch conformity is an experiment to examine
the degree to which an individual may be
influenced by social pressure from the
majority group. Asch (1951) invented what
is now considered to be a classic social
psychology test, whereby a line assessment
question was simply asked. The studies on
conformity with Asch were a series of
psychological experiments performed during
the 1950s by Solomon Asch. The studies
showed the degree to which those of groups
were affected by a person's own opinions.
Asch found that people are willing to ignore

People who are aware that they will take a test with a group of
unknown people tend to think if they will conform or stand for
their answers. The experiments also examined the effect on
conformity of the number of persons present in the group. Seven
(7) participants conformed an answer/s and three (3) of them
stands firm to their answers. There are two (2) participants
conformed five (5) times and above. The participants were
asked at the end of the experiments why they had gone with the
rest of the group. The students stated in most cases that while
they knew the rest of the group was wrong, they didn't want to
risk the ridicule. Some of the participants suggested that they
thought the other members of the group were correct in their
replies.

The Asch conformity experiments are one of
the most famous in the history of psychology
and have influenced a wealth of further
research into conformity and group attitude.
The investigations defined in this episode
deal with the conditions of independence
throughout the face of group pressure and
lack of independence. The theoretical
temperature of current theory and study in
this area relies to a considerable extent on
neglecting the cognitive and emotional
interactions that are part of the psychological
environment of the person. Understanding
social influences will require studying a wide
range of conditions and various
psychological functions ' interrelated
operations. In a classroom, a group of seven
to nine people were gathered to participate in
what seemed to be a simple experiment in
visual discrimination. All male, white college
students were the subjects, ranging from 17
to 25 years of age; the average age was 20. A
large number of critical topics were required
for the present experiment for certain
purposes. A total of 123 subjects are based on
the present report. The task was to compare a
standard line with three other lines, one of
which was equal to the standard in length. In
the face of arbitrary group pressure, we
investigated some of the conditions that are
responsible for independence and lack of
independence. To this end, we produced a
disagreement on a clear and simple question
of fact between a group and an individual
member. The interview, which followed the
experimental session, provided qualitative
evidence of the effects produced by the
majority, described the specific
characteristics of the experimental situation
and their relationship to more common social
contradictions.
According to Knud S. Larsen, asch's study is
recognized as a classic social psychology
experiment, demonstrating subjects'
tendency to conform when exposed to
unanimous majority social pressure. During
the 1950s, when McCarthysm was active and
alive, Asch conducted his study, a period
known to his unobtrusive students. Could this
simple perceptual task also have been
affected by the general social pressure
generated towards conformity at that time? If
so, after the last decade of student activism,
we should expect less conformity. This
study's purpose was to try to replicate the
experiment. Furthermore, we have included
self-esteem as a predictor of conformity, as
other investigators have shown that self-
esteem is related to persuasion under certain
conditions. The procedure was the same as
the study of asch. As stimulus material, cards
with straight lines were used. The experiment
consisted of 18 trials in which two cards were
compared. One card had one line, the other
three different cards and it was asked to be
identified by the S. In twelve of the eighteen
trials, several Confederates unanimously
made the wrong choice before the decision of
the S. All S s also completed a self-esteem
measure consisting of a semantic and real
self-evaluation of the idea. The two
assessments were taken as an assessment of
self-esteem. Of the twenty-four students (all
college students), fifteen (62.5 percent)
participated in one or more tests. The number
of errors varied from 0-9, meaning 2.38
compared to the ash experiment, showing
that 94 of 124 S s (76.5%) were at least once;
the number of errors was 0-12 for an average
of 4.41. Therefore, both the number of S
conforming and the quantity of conformity
produced were reduced. The t-test is
measured between the top and bottom half of
the self-esteem.
1. Study
In the first part of the experiment, we
examine if the participants will conform to
the stooges or will not be pressured due to the
wrong answers that are answered by the
stooges. In the second part of the experiment
wherein there are one stooge that will say the
right answer and we will wait for the
participant if he/she will conform to the
wrong answer or say the right answer.
1.1 Method
1.1.1 Participants
We randomly selected at least 10 participants
from different courses for this experiment
and voluntarily took the test and participated
to the study. There are seven (7) male and
three (3) female participants. The age of
participants ranges from 17-22 years old (M=
17.25, SD= 1.58). 70% of the participants
conformed to the wrong answers that was
said by the stooges. While the 30% of the
participants does not conform and answered
the correct answers.
1.1.2. Materials and Procedure
During the experiment, We, experimenters,
used school chairs as well as the professors
table. The questions are projected on the
white board to enlarge the questions and
make more visible to the participants. The
projector that we used is that Cordia RD-803
2202 lumens Multimedia LED Projector with
HDMI/Video/VGA/TV/Black. There are
experimenters that randomly select
participant outside the classroom. They first
ask the participant if they have classes so that
the test will not disturb their classes. As the
participant went to the room where the test
will be conducted, stooges will act like they
do not know what will they do and will went
inside the room with the innocent participant.
There are five (5) chairs that are arranged
horizontally in front of the table; in front of
the green and white board. The stooges will
leave one seat before the last chair for the
innocent participant. The instructor will first
tell the instructions and starts the test. From
the leftmost stooge will start the wrong
answer up to the 4th stooge and the innocent
participant’s answer are awaited if he/she
will conform or not. In the next part of the
experiment, one of the stooges will say the
right answer and wait for the conformation of
the innocent participant to the wrong answer
since the stooges who answered the stimuli
wrong are dominant than the right answer.
1.2 Results and discussion
Preliminary analyses indicated that seven (7)
participants conform while the three (3) of
the participants does not conform. Nearly 70
percent of the participants in the conformity
experiments went along with the rest of the
group at least one time. We also found that
having one of the Confederates gave the right
answer while the rest of the Confederates
gave the wrong answer dramatically lowered
compliance. Only 50% to 70% of the
participants conformed to the rest of the
group in this situation. When the experiments
end, we debriefing them and asked them what
are they feeling when the confederates
answer the wrong one, they said that ‘what?
Why?’ Seven (7) participants conformed an
answer/s and three (3) of them stands firm to
their answers. The participants were asked at
the end of the experiments why they had gone
