From reality to mythology

The abundant biodiversity in our environment before and in the present really has a big difference.
For the past, past years, different species thrive from all over the globe but today, they are now
undergoing that scary phenomenon called “extinction”. And it is really quiet frightening to think that in
the future, they are nowhere to be seen.

I know we are all familiar with the myths and fairy tales. Ever heard of the mythical creature the
“phoenix”? We thought of them as a long ago story and at the same time we have wondered if they
really existed. But of course they existed. Our ancestors may be exaggerated in some way but they
do not resort to just pure fabrication of stories. They are intelligent people and their actions are
based unto something else. Therefore, what they told the generation after them is probably true.

The extinction of those species in the past may either be caused by nature or by man. But as of
today, it is obvious that the extinction of some of the fauna of earth is caused by man. Species are
being hunted because of their benefits. Some are being used in scientific and medical experiments.
Some are being hunted for food and others are being slaughtered for the certain parts of their body
that has a great monetary value. A great example of this are the seals which are hunted because of
their furs, which is then made into jackets and other garments. Isn’t it too much? Hunting those
creatures to supply the luxuries of the people. They can as well made jackets out of an alternative.
That way they do not only preserve a single life. They also allow them to generate their race.

On the other hand, it is not only the seals that suffer the consequences. Elephants are also hunted
and killed for their tusks. People would just get their tusks and leave them behind, dying. An
elephant’s tusk really cost great and that’s the primary reason why people are after their tusk. The
monetary value and the money itself. These drive people to commit unto something which is very
unhuman. We are dying to become rich, to have the things in this world and we do not care if there
is a certain creature that will suffer from our action. What is important is that we get what we want.
It’s selfishness. We’ve become so rude to other creature that we’ve forgot our role in the
environment. Being stewards of other creatures. We’ve been destroying their habitats to build our
own. And where do they supposed to go if everywhere, there is always human intervention? Even
the fittest of them won’t survive. And if this will continue for years, we are losing a very important
component of our environment.

But somehow, it’s great to know that in some part of the world, there are those organization whose
advocacy is to save the endangered species. They are really a great help in maintaining the
biodiversity in our environment. Let it not be the last stand of these endangered species. We do not
want the future generation to see only the pictures of those species. We do not want to tell them that
it was just myths and fairy tales. Let us be one of those who protect rather than destroy -- preserve
rather than kill.
