The Virgin of Coromoto is a Marian advocacy venerated by the Venezuelans and is

the patroness of Venezuela. Santa Maria of Coromoto in Guanare of the Cospes

appeared in 1652 to the Cacique Coromoto of the Indians Cospes that lived in the
jungles of Portuguesa, in Venezuela, there’s where it comes her name of devotion.

Since then its attached to the Virgin of Coromoto favors and miracles. The tiny
image of the Virgin of Coromoto it’s the relic that today is venerated in Guanare, in
the National Sanctuary Our Lady of Coromoto, that was built in the place of her
second apparition.

In 1942 the Episcopate Venezuelan ordered and proclaimed Our Lady of Coromoto,
official patroness of Venezuela

The Virgin of Coromoto is the patroness of Venezuela since October 7th of 1944
when the pope Pío XII confirmed, build and declared Holy Virgin of Coromoto,
Celestial and Principal Patroness of Venezuela.

May 14th of 1949, the church of Guanare was elevated to Minor Basilica by their
Holiness Pío XII. In it was guarded the relic leaved by the Virgin in the hand of the
Indian Coromoto.

300 years since her apparition, September 11th of 1952, was coroneted Sacred
image by Cardinal Manuel Arteaga Betancourt.

In 1976 under the patronage of the Congregation of the Servants of the Holy, the
M. Guadalupe, M. Elizabeth, Monsignor Alfonzo Vaz, Monsignor Angel Polacini and
others, build the Civil Association Venezuela of the Virgin of Coromoto for the
edification of the National Votive Temple to the Virgin, in the exact place of her last
apparition. There was moved the relic of the Virgin, and was placed in the special
spot for the veneration of the faithfuls.
In January of 1996 was elevated to the category of Sanctuary by his Excellence
Monsignor Oriano Quillici, Apostolic Nuncio in Venezuela.

In February of the same year was inaugurated by his Holiness Juan Pablo II, in his
visit to our country. This Sanctuary, his Holiness Benedicto XVI, elevated to Minor
Basilica, in 2007.

Celebration

The Virgin of Coromoto is the patroness of Venezuela since October 7th of 1944
when the pope Pío XII declared her. Her coronation canonical was made in
September 11th of 1952 and since then in this date is celebrated the Day of the
Virgin of Coromoto. (Is celebrated just that day)
