Does social media only benefits us in all the best ways possible or we need to be more careful for it is

not good for our mental health?

Social media is considered as the pillar of knowledge, entertainment and social interaction with

others to all countries in the world. It is also important in information dissemination about world issues

and raising awareness of a cause.

"Hey have you seen the recent tweet of Kathryn Bernardo? She's so sweet!" When your friend

suddenly updates you into something that you haven't seen yet what do you usually do? You quickly

grab your phone, punch in your password, turn on your mobile data and immediately click the logo of

the app right? With these, people devote more time in seeing all of these, because they are afraid they

might 'miss out' and will soon be hard to catch on. Though social media is useful, nowadays it is abused.

A survey conducted by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) showed that cyberbullying and

online violence affects over 70% of young people globally.

Use of too much social media can lead to sleep deprivation, either boost or lower self-esteem and

develops health problems due to constantly skipping meals to satisfy your addiction in it. Social media is

harmful for your physical health, and it is also toxic in our mental health.

Mental health does not only refer to our rate of intelligence. It also affects our behavioral and

emotional well-being. Due to sleep deprivation, sometimes it can cause hallucinations and can increase

your chance to be vulnerable to depression. It could also lower self concentration and poor memory

quality.

Adolescence is the time where increased curiousity about anything arises. And this makes us the

most affected ones in terms of the use of social media. We are more likely to be addicted to it and is
equally harmful to our mental health. Perks of social media can remain accessibly indefinite online but

so is the harm it can bring to us.
