SECTION – A
(1) Attempt all questions in brief (2×10=20)
Q1. (a) For carbon disulphide all vibrations that are Raman Active are infrared inactive
and vice-versa , where as for nitrous oxide (N2O) the vibrations are simultaneously
Raman and IR active. What can be conclude about the structure of N2O and CS2.
(b) Why are pure rotational spectra studied only in the gaseous states of atoms and
molecules ?
(c) Find E.M.F of the following cell at 250 C. Ag Ag+ (0.01M) Ag+ (0.1M) Ag
(d) A piece of impure zinc and pure zinc are placed in a salt solution. Which will
corrode rapid.
(e) Predict the nature of corrosion that would take a place, if an Iron grinder is nailed
by using aluminum nails.
(f) Calculate the bond order of CO and NO.
(g) Define carbon Nanocones and applications of Nanocones.
(h) Define a chemical fuel.
(i) 0.72 gm of a fuel containing 80% carbon, when burnt in a bomb calorimefer,
increased the temperature of water from 27.30 to 29.10 C. If the calorimeter contains
250 g of H2O and its fuel in Kj/Kg.
(j) It is possible to have a quadruple point on a phase diagram for a one component
system.

(a) Discuss electronics properties of metals based on band theory.

(c) A sample of coal containing 89% C, 8% H, 3% ash. When this coal sample was
tested in the laboratory for it's calorific value in the bomb calorimeter, the following
data were obtained :
Weight of coal burnt = 0.85 g. wt of water taken = 650 gm. water equivalent of bomb
and calorimeter = 2500 g.
Rise in temperature = 2.50 C
Cooling correction = 0.030 C
Fuse wire correction = 10cal
acid correction = 50cal
Assuming that the latent heat of condensation of steam as 587 cal/g. Calculate the (i)
gross and (ii) net calorific values of the coal/gm.
(d) A sample of coal contains C= 93%, H = 6% and ash = 1% the following data were
obtained when the above coal was tested in bomb calorimeter.
(i) wt of coal burnt = 0.92 gm (ii) wt of water taken = 2200 gm
(iii) Water equivalent of bomb calorimeter = 550 gm
(iv) Rise in temp = 2.420 C (v) fuse wire correction = 10.0 cal
(vi) Acid correction = 50.0 cal.
Calculate gross and net calorific values of coal, assuming the latent heat of
condensation of steam as 580 cal/gm.
(e) (i) Discuss the classification of liquid crystals and write their
application.
(ii) The density of Nacl is 2.163 g/cc, calculate the edge of it's cubic
cell, assuming that four molecules of Nacl are associated per unit cell.

(a) A Zeolite softener was 95% exhausted, when 10,000 L of hard water was passed
through it. The softener required 150 L of Nacl solution of strength hardness of water.

temperature coefficient is 1.74 × 10-4 Vk-1. Calculate the value of ∆ G, ∆ S and ∆ H.
