We have demonstrated that simple mathematical software, MATLAB, can be integrated
into a separations course as a useful and effective teaching aid for visualization and numerical computation of many separation processes. The benefits of using MATLAB are the following: Step-by-step and interactive display can make conventional graphical approaches more enjoyable to students and more effective in classroom. Visualization of the graphical methods has been further extended to the study of packed-column analysis. By spending less time on the details of solving problems graphically and by trial-and-error, we were able to spend more time discussing the conceptual and quantitative description of processes, and incorporate recent trends and design aspects in the separations course. User-friendly routines of MATLAB can be used to solve systems of non
