Have you ever defined a person by the language they use? One language discrimination
issue that arises is how the level of one’s intelligence affects the way they are perceived by
society. To expand on this topic to put it into basic terms being able to use academic language
can be seen as a person who thinks they are in a higher class than others and that everyone they
speak to is below them. Intelligent people tend to use a broad range of vocabulary that is not
regularly used, and they tend to not incorporate slang when they have conversations or
presenting to a whole. Some examples of this language could be someone who graduated from a
university with a Ph.D., modern scientist, even just someone who has broadly expanded their
knowledge in their lifetime. People in a society like to harshly judge these types of intellectuals
simply due to the fact they cannot keep up with the language and vocabulary and this angers
people because they then feel like they are on a lower scale compared to these people. People
that critically judge these intellectuals put in their minds that when using this language, the one
speaking is doing it on purpose to make everyone around seem less as this is not the case, they
are simply just conversating in the way they know how too. Another concept that comes into
play when this language is being discriminated is that people always tend to think that these
intellectuals always come from a higher class and have the most money this is why they are
constantly using an intelligent tone. Oddly enough as there are no real facts to confirm that
thought as there are many individuals that have a different vocabulary set which they come from
all classes that are in. the American society. People who speak in an intelligent tone get
discriminated simply because they have a broad range of vocabulary.
