“Humor in Healthcare”.

With a simple glance at the title shown above during the video presentation,

you could already determine that it had something to do with patients, nurses, doctors and with the word

humor itself. The video presentation was led by Gary Edward who tackles about his personal experiences

15 years ago in Czech Republic. The video manifest ideas and process that fulfilled great deal of success to

every patient’s life of all ages. Clowndoctors, whose mission is to develop and guide humor in healthcare

project worldwide and advocating for child’s rights.

The information tells us the relevance and importance of humor in healthcare. We all know that

children are scared of hospitals. They think that hospital is a traumatic place for them, it is important to

put and give awareness to the children that hospitals or healthcare is not a place for them to be scared of.

That is why we need to put entertainment by the needs of clown doctors for them to lessen their trauma

and anxiety and also for them to think that it is not a place for them to be scared of but a place of valuing

laughter and healthcare. At the point when patients feel truly wiped out, these informations help us to

apply this for them to support their certainty and lift up their feelings of dread. Humour are one of those

factors that the doctors or other health professionals should learn and really work on it because it is not

just children who needs it but for everyone or for every age. Humor plays an important role in healthcare

because it helps to promote and establish relationship between the patients and health professionals or

doctors. A 2017 study, “Humor, laughter, learning and health!” published by the American Physiological

Society (APA), concurred with that thought, even encouraging educators to fold humor into classroom

activities. The report noted that teaching is much more than imparting knowledge. To pass on information,

in the best possible way, educators are try to connect to students — but also help them retain this

information so they can build on it and move forward in their education.

STEM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS) Science is everywhere in the

world around us. Technology is continuously expanding into every aspect of our lives. Engineering is the

basic designs of roads and bridges, but also tackles the challenges of changing global weather and

environmentally-friendly changes to our home. Mathematics is in every occupation, every activity we do

in our lives. By exposing students to STEM and giving them opportunities to explore STEM-related

concepts, they will develop a passion for it and hopefully pursue a job in a STEM field. Nurses and other

health professions are under science and health cluster, it is applicable for what we’re studying because it

will serve our guide in order for us to know what are those basic factors and necessary skills that we need

to learn in order for us to serve and to be in addition for what healthcare needs. They create humorous

and amusing scenes, where medicines are magic pills, where a hospital bed is a space machine, a flying

car or a magic carpet. By turning the hospital room into a space that favours play and by stimulating

children’s senses and capabilities, clown doctors turn the hospital environment into a less scary and

more humane place for them. According to (Launer J. Postgrad Med J 2016), Humour is universal in

health care. Doctors and nurses crack jokes and tease one another, just like people in any walk of life. We

use humour with patients to lighten the mood, or simply to show we are human. Most of us give little

thought to the whys and wherefores of humour in medical settings. This is probably just as well: the last

thing we need is to have training courses for medics in how to tell jokes. However, I recently taught on a
course for paramedics and was struck by their continual lighthearted banterI discovered that there is a

settled culture of cleverness in their calling.

According to (Anes, L & Obi, M., 2014) A serious illness, a chronic medical condition or a hospital bed

should not deny any child her/his basic right to play, a right essential for children’s development and

general wellbeing. In fact, it is in these frightening and anxious moments that play and the stimulus that it

provides can help the most. This article will focus on the impacts and benefits of professional hospital

clowning for the well being and recovery process of ill and hospitalized children. To meet the needs and

characteristics of every specific “ audience”, clowndoctor performances make use of

culturally-appropriated and specially-designed holistic methods that are essential to connect with the

children. In an environment where the theme of play is lacking, clowns often use the situation of simply

having the patient in a hospital room or having medical material and instruments at hand to initiate and

engage in some form of play.

We therefore conclude that humor played an essential role in maintaining a good camaraderie

between the patients and the health professionals and in addition, humor is one of the factor for faster
and better recovery brought by the health professionals. A good sense of humor can even protect your

heart health and give your immune system a boost. This set up may apply to Philippine hospitals because

we Filipinos are known as being happy persons, also according to a Philippine inquirer, in fact, this trait is

one of the distinct assets of millions of Filipino doctors, nurses, caregivers, and nannies who work abroad.

Personal interaction can get lost and nurses sometimes miss humorous attempts made by patients.

Humour is a very personal concept, what one person thinks is funny does not necessarily make another

person smile, or might even be hurtful. Humour is an important communication tool for patients as it

humanises the nurses, creates a bond and opens communication lines. Humour has the potential to

change the hospital experience for patients.

Humor plays an important role in healthcare even when patients are terminally ill. (2008, April 8).
