NEW FERRY ROUTES TO NYC

GOAL
Provide commuters from counties outside of NYC with one stop
water- transportation to Manhattan by finding sites in region
suitable for developing ferry terminals.

1. Census Transportation Planning Package(CTPP)

CRITERIA
1. Number of commuters in the county
2. Availability of barren land type for development
3. Site must be at least 0.5 Km away from existing transit systems in region
4. Within 2 KM of a major Highway

COMMUTERS
• Using PostGreSQL, find the counties with most commuters to Manhattan
• First 5 counties are NYC Boroughs, excluded them
• Looked at counties 6-8 based on number of commuters

Extracted all the Barren Land features
-500M Buffer around existing transit stops
-1.6KM Buffer around Highways
SITE EVALUATION PROCESS WITH POSTGIS
-Organized all files in Database
-Weighed proximity to Highways higher than distance from Transit

-Queried data with PostGIS functions to find sites that fit both criteria
First: Barren land and highways
Second: Transit and barren land results from first query
SITE SELECTION
-Mapped resulting sites on QGIS
-Found the ones located near water
-Created a choropleth layer of commuters by Census Tract for surrounding
region
-Chose the best fitting site
-Digitized point path from site to a port in Manhattan
VISUALIZING WITH CARTODB
-Created geoJSON’s for the digitized layer
-Used MakeLine function to join points to create a ferry route
-Calculated statistics for popup using QGIS.
