A BRIEF HISTORY OF DUNKIN' DONUTS

Dunkin', also known as Dunkin'

Donuts, is an American multinational coffee/donut
company and quick service restaurant. It was
founded by William Rosenberg in Quincy,
Massachusetts in 1950. The chain was acquired by
Baskin-Robbins' holding company Allied Domecq in 1990; its
acquisition of the Mister Donut chain and the conversion of that chain
to Dunkin' Donuts facilitated the brand's growth in North America that
year. Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin-Robbins have been subsidiaries of
Dunkin' Brands, headquartered in Canton, Massachusetts, since 2004.

The chain began rebranding as a "beverage-led company", and was William Rosenberg
renamed Dunkin', in January 2019.

With nearly 12,000 locations in 36 countries, Dunkin' is one of the largest coffee and baked
goods chains in the world. Its products include donuts, bagels, other baked goods, and a variety
of hot and iced beverages.

HISTORY

William Rosenberg opened Open Kettle in 1948, a restaurant selling donuts and coffee in
Quincy, Massachusetts, but he changed the name in 1950 to Dunkin' Donuts after discussing
with company executives. He conceived the idea for the restaurant after his experiences selling
food in factories and at construction sites, where donuts and coffee were the two most popular
items. The restaurant was successful, and Rosenberg sold franchises to others starting in 1955.

In 1963, Rosenberg's son Robert became CEO of the company at age 25, and Dunkin’ Donuts
opened its hundredth location that year. Dunkin' Donuts was a subsidiary of Universal Food
Systems at the time, a conglomerate of 10 small food-service businesses, and Dunkin' Donuts
locations varied greatly in their menu options, with some selling full breakfasts and others
serving only donuts and coffee.

In the following years, the other businesses in the Universal Food Systems portfolio were sold or
closed, and the company was renamed to Dunkin' Donuts. The menu and shop format were
standardized, and various new menu items were introduced. The chain was acquired by Baskin-
Robbins owner Allied Lyons in 1990. By 1998, the brand had grown to 2,500 locations
worldwide with $2 billion in annual sales.

Dunkin' Donuts expanded in the 1990s by buying out two rival chains: Mister Donut and Dawn
Donuts.

In 2004, the company's headquarters were relocated to Canton. In December 2005, Dunkin'
Donuts and Baskin-Robbins (by then operating under the name Dunkin' Brands) were sold to a
private equity consortium of Bain Capital, Carlyle Group, and Thomas H. Lee Partners for $2.4
billion. By 2010, Dunkin' Donuts' global sales were $6 billion.

Nutrition remains a key priority for Dunkin’ Brands, and the company is committed to offering
great-tasting food and beverages that meet many different dietary needs. By the end of 2015,
Dunkin’ Donuts will roll out new guidelines for its DDSMART® menu of better-for-you
choices, including calorie, sugar, sodium Andrew saturated fat thresholds. Dunkin’ Donuts
continues to work toward goals to reduce the sodium content across its U.S. menu by 10% by
December 31, 2015, and to reduce the sugar content in its U.S. beverage portfolio by the end of
2017. Baskin-Robbins will also test new smoothies with a reduced amount of sugar and calories
in the U.S. in 2015.

The Dunkin' Donuts in Natick, Massachusetts launched a program to test the concept of curbside
pickup in December 2016.

In January 2018, Dunkin' Donuts began to open new concept locations, beginning in Quincy,
featuring modern decor, cold beverages on tap and a single-cup brewing machine, more
packaged take-out options, and dedicated pick-up lines for mobile ordering inside and in the
drive-thru. The concept was described as being part of a shift towards becoming an "on-the-go,
beverage-led brand". In addition, the location, as well as others, began to trial signage referring
to the chain as simply "Dunkin'"—downplaying "Donuts" from the name.

On July 11, 2018, Dave Hoffman took over from Nigel Travis to become the CEO. He is looking
to add 1,000 new locations outside of the Northeastern United States by the end of 2020 and to
have a revenue increase of 3 percent for stores open a year or longer.

SOCIETAL CONTRIBUTION/CHARITABLE CONSTITUTION

Dunkin' Donuts has a close relationship with the Boston Red Sox and the New
England Patriots, making commercials at the start of each team's season for promotions. Dunkin’
Donuts also sponsors other professional sports teams, including the Dallas Cowboys, New York
Yankees, New York Mets, Philadelphia Eagles, and Tampa Bay Rays. In January 2014, English
football club Liverpool announced a multimillion-pound global partnership with the company.
Dunkin' Donuts signed a sponsorship deal with the National Women's Hockey League in
December 2015. As part of the multi-year agreement, Dunkin’ Donuts is the official hot, iced
and frozen coffee of the NWHL. In 2001, Dunkin' Donuts purchased the naming rights for the
former Providence Civic Center, and renamed it the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The center is
currently the home court for the NCAA and Big East Providence Friars men's basketball team
from Providence College as well as home ice for the AHL Providence Bruins hockey team. In
reference to the Center's long association with local college basketball,
it is often known locally as "The Dunk". In 2015, Dunkin' Donuts was announced as the named
sponsor of the baseball park in Hartford, Connecticut, new home of the Hartford Yard Goats
baseball team. It will be named Dunkin' Donuts Park.

Joy in Childhood Foundation

The Joy in Childhood Foundation provides the simple joys of childhood to kids who
need it most.

Founded in 2006, the Joy in Childhood Foundation is an

independent organization powered by Dunkin’ and Baskin-
Robbins as well as the generosity of their partners, franchisees,
employees and guests.

The mission of the Joy in Childhood Foundation is to provide simple moments of joy to sick and
hungry kids. Since 2006, the Joy in Childhood Foundation has granted millions of dollars to help
improve the lives of children and families in the communities where they operate.

Employee Giving and Volunteerism

As part of their benefits package, Dunkin’ Brands employees get five hours of paid volunteer
time a year. Their employees volunteer with various organizations in the community – from
veterans organizations to animal rescue leagues and homeless shelters. One of their most beloved
giving programs, Coffee For their Troops, provides pounds of Dunkin’ coffee to troops overseas
thanks in part to donations from their employees.

Franchise Giving

For Dunkin’ and Baskin-Robbins franchisees, charitable giving begins at their own front doors.
Their franchisees generously support many local organizations such as the Jimmy Fund,
American Red Cross, Autism Speaks, Special Olympics, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Easter
Seals, and local children’s hospitals.

Since 2006, they'll have distributed more than $20 million in grants to national and local
nonprofits that provide joy to kids battling hunger and illness. Here are some of the ways that
measured their success:

Raised $6.5 million with the help of our franchisees, employees, corporate partners and guests.

Granted $5.3 million to 200+ organizations focused on

children’s health and hunger relief.

Mobilized 2,200 employees to pack 351,455 meals at 85

food banks.

Delivered 10,000 Starlight Gowns to children in local hospitals.

Provided 1.4 million meals to children and families through Feeding America grants.

Dunkin’ Brands is passionate about helping people, one neighborhood at a time. From 2011 to
2014, the company’s franchisees donated more than $20 million to non-profit groups in the U.S.
alone. The Dunkin’ Donuts & Baskin-Robbins Community Foundation (DDBRCF) raised a
record $3.2 million in 2014 to support its mission of serving neighborhoods through hunger
relief, children’s health and safety initiatives.

These results were driven in part by The DDBRCF’s first in-store fundraising program, which
raised $540,000 with guest support.

The DDBRCF also expanded its national partnership with Feeding America through a $1 million
commitment over three years, the largest donation in The DDBRCF’s history. Funds support
Feeding America’s Food Pantry and BackPack program helping children and their families at
local food banks across the country.

The American Red Cross and Dunkin’ Donuts are partnering to help increase blood donations
and reward generous donors during the month of January.

Through the Dunkin’ Donors Make a Difference campaign, those who give blood or platelets in
January at Red Cross blood drives in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire,
Vermont and parts of New York will receive a $5 DD Card.

Donating blood or platelets helps to save lives, said Donna M.

Morrissey, director of national partnerships, Red Cross
Biomedical Services, and the need for blood doesn’t break for
winter weather.

The $5 DD Card can be used toward the purchase of any item

- including coffee, hot chocolate and baked goods - at participating Dunkin’ Donuts.
Additionally, the DD Card features a Red Cross logo, is
reloadable and can also be enrolled in the DD Perks Rewards
program.

“We’re proud to partner with the Red Cross once again to

thank blood donors this January,” said Todd Wallace, Dunkin’
Donuts senior field marketing manager.

“The Dunkin’ Donors Make a Difference campaign clearly

resonates with donors and benefits countless people and
communities in need. It reflects Dunkin’ Donuts’ steadfast
commitment to the health of the communities in which we live
and operate.”

The Red Cross and Dunkin’ Donuts partnership has achieved great success during the past 10
years by supporting the collection of approximately 790,000 blood and platelet donations during
January, which is often a challenging month for donations due to winter weather forcing blood
drives to cancel and seasonal illnesses temporarily keeping some donors at home.

CONCLUSION

Dunkin' Donut's mission drives the company to success. Their mission is, “to make and serve
the freshest, most delicious coffee and donuts quickly and courteously in modern, well
merchandized stores. With proper store design, simple organizational structure, and recruitment
and training techniques will ensure that the company continues to grow and be more profitable in
years to come. They will continue to be recognized as one of “the world’s leading franchisers of
