Problem Definition
1. Management Decision Problem :
What should be done by the management of BITS Pilani to ensure that student ID card
can not be misused if the ID card gets stolen/lost.

According to the complaints received from many students who had lost their ID cards
and afterwards, found their SWD balance shooting skies BITS management has decided
to intervene and look into the matter of increasing security of ID cards.

It should be noted that there are following operations for which student ID card is used:
A. The ID card is used for ​issuing books​ at the library.
B. The ID card is used for ​instant payment for food orders​ at various institutional eating
outlets like- ANC, Looters, Foodking, Institute canteen etc

The management of BITS want to find out what can be done to solve this problem and
hence take appropriate

2. Marketing Research Problem

To determine the loopholes in security of student ID card.

RQ1:Does the retailer checks whether the face of the beholder matches with the photo on the
ID card or not?
H0: If the face is matched, only then can transaction occur.
H1: If the face doesn't match then the retailer cancels the transaction.

RQ2: Can the card be blocked from institutional food outlets without much effort?
H0: The card can be blocked effortlessly from any of the institutional food outlets.
H1: Blocking the card requires a lot of effort.

RQ3: Can ID card can be temporarily blocked ?

H0: The cards can be temporarily blocked.
H1:​ Once a card is blocked you have to apply for new card. ​ if the card was misplaced we
can reactivate it instead of applying for new one.

RQ4: Has there been any past incidents of stolen ID card usage ?
H0: There is a significant no. Of incidents.
H1:All students are honest and no misuses a lost Id card.
Research design
We will be using explanatory research design for finding out security issues with ID card. Noone
can find out all the loopholes single handedly so we made a questionnaire for data collection
and made a focus group for processing and concluding the data.

Questionnaire

We introduced a google form for easier participation and collection of data.

★ Detail of the student was collected: Email, Hostel, Year of study
★ How likely are you to misplace your ID card……..rate from 1 to 10.
★ Have you ever lost your ID card and afterwards found that someone has misused your
ID card
I. If yes after how many days did you realise that your ID card is lost
★ How many times have you found someone’s misplaced ID card ?

Focus groups

From the data collected by questionnaire a brief discussion was held among 3rd and 4th
yearites regarding what could be done to fix security issues of Student ID card. And following
were the issues and solution for fixing security issues
When a student loses his ID card there are 2 scenarios .
i. In the first scenario the student finds out that his card is lost within 2-3 hrs after
misplacing the ID card.
ii. In the 2nd scenario a student finds out his ID card is lost after a long time say after some
days.
Current security features in ID card ​- the only security feature on ID cards is student’s photo
which is ignored while transactions with ID card
Some solutions which are reliable and can be introduced in system can be:-
A) Creating an online portal to immediately freeze activity on ID card as many times student
has to go to all eating outlets for blocking which is tiresome.
B) Adding a security password for transaction with ID card. This password can be thumb
impression for user convenience.
