In no less than 600 words, what to do you think had led to Sandra's depression and
what measures do you think must be done to help her?
| do believe that the “Sandra’ in the song was depressed or became depressed due to her
being a mother at a young age and was not given enough time to enjoy her childhoodteenage
years. She had to grew up early because of the responsibility that she has to partakeor fulfill for the
betterment/benefit of the people that surrounds her especially, her children. She is a very good
person that loves her family and gives her best to fulfill what she has to fulfill as said in the first 4
lines:
“she's a great little housewife
Though sometimes she talks like a foo!
But she helps at the store in the holiday rush
Andshe picks up the kids after school."
Butthen hints of her being a teenager comes into the scene from the lines of:
“And she puts down the phone when her husband comes home
‘And she changes from mother to wife
‘The effects of social media, | think, might have also added weight to the confusion and the
things that Sandra was feeling already. Being envious to her friends because of the achievernents,
adventures, or experiences that her friends have attained while she is at home and is now locked
and concealed to the commitment of raising a family. From the lines:
“She don't even know what she's missin’
And that’s how she know that she missed.”
‘These things can have a great deal of mentalimpact towardsa personespeciallyif still under
puberty. It can really cause depression. Lines that proves that she is still under puberty is the part
where:"She's a sweetheart, except when she's moody
It's hard to get through to her then.”
This can be a sign that she's still experiencing menstrual cycles which makes her moody
and extremely bipolar which is, for a fact, a sign of puberty and also a vulnerable state for every
person because as | have said earlier, teenagers that are still undergoing puberty have a lot more
chance of being depressed than the matured people because this is the age where they are still
trying to open up their minds but the tension of their emotions are at peak.
As I browse through the lyrics and listen to the song, the feeling of the whole song does not
‘equate to a forced pregnancy, meaning that there was no rape or violence that happened. Only
high influence, confused minds and bad decisions. As a song lover and a choir member, | know for
a fact that if the song writer repeats certain lines, they are emphasizing the message behind it. It
can be emphasized in ways stich as putting it on chorus or raising the key of the note one step
higher. In this case, these lines where emphasized for it isthe chorus:
“she says: Iswear Jove my husband, [love my kids
Iwanted to be like my mother
But if | hadn't done it as soon as! did
Oh, there might have been time to be me
For myself, for myself."
She loves her family and also idolizes her mother so much that she wanted to be like her at
an early age but didnt know the consequences of that decision. A big influence could have taken
place that pushes her to follow her mother's footsteps Maybe because her mother took care of her
and her farnily well or maybe her mother was abused back then but still fulfilled her duties as a
mother or maybe her mother was a single parent to them, Alot of meaning can be hidden as to
why she idolizes her mother so much but none are mentioned in the song so that the song can be
‘open to different interpretations.
As the song goes on, you can see the development of Sandra's character. You can see them
in the lines
“Depressed for a while when the youngest was bornOh, but that happens now and again
‘She might take a drinkwith the housework
Or when Michael's kept late at the shop
A martini or two before dinner
But she always knows when to stop.”
“Oh, they used tohold hands at the movies
Nowit's seldom if ever they go
(Once youve paid for the sitter and parkin' the car
There's no money left for the show’
‘The depression continues to grow when things like: same housework done everyday which
can really drive a person stressed and depressed, wanting to drink the problems away but cant.
because she has to be responsibleso she limits it, financial problems, losing the remaining ember
of love that she and her husband has, another child to take care of meaning to say that another
responsibility to sustain, These things that she has to adapt to slowly eats her up making her more
vulnerable to depression and in the end when she finally gets a taste of the solution that she thinks
is best in the lines
“When a glass fell and broke on the tile
And she cut her wrist (quite by mistake)
It was a real touch and go for a while.
She finally let's go and gives in to depression. in what Ie learned from our college guidance
councilor and her seminars is that if you feel that a person needs help, you do not hesitate to offer
your help for the person needs that help. A person that has a growing depression within him/her
needs a lot of supportto battle the depression. think that what Sandra really needs is that support
from her family. Maybe she feels that as a mother, she has to be strong for her family and so it
consumes her and it is wrong, The people that I think that she needs to hear from is from her idol,
which is her mom, and her husband that she loves sodearly because at the end of the day, she does
everything for them and for the kids and that the help, support, and strength that she needs to
battle depression will come from them, Hearing approval or support and receiving help from the
people that she does sacrifices more, based on my experience from the people | know that battle
depression and also from my own experiences, outweighs the professional help that is offered by
the medical experts. Nothing can uplift your spirits more than receiving acknowledgement from
the people that you put effort to.
