Post Personal Philosophy of Special Education

At the beginning of this course I believed that a classroom is a community. In a community

there are different kinds of people. You learn from and grow with the people in your

community. Every single person in your community is important and plays a role. After

finishing this course, I still believe this but actually feel even stronger about the sense of

community and belonging that is needed in a classroom. Not only does a student with a

disability deserve an education, they deserve to belong to the community of the classroom. Just

as much, a general education student can learn so much being in a class with a student with a

disability. Having the student learn understanding and compassion will make them better

adults.

The main role of a special education teacher is to provide support and instruction to each

induvial student. I believe that students with special needs learn best in smaller groups,

organized classrooms, and various types of instruction. I believe it is ok with think outside the

box when teaching a student with special needs. As a teacher of a student with special needs, I

would set a different goal for each student, but my overall goal would be for them to learn, have

fun, and feel loved. All students are capable of learning. Some may take a little longer to process

but everyone can learn. If you become a special education teacher, you should be prepared for

the challenges and welcome them. As a special education teacher, you owe your students the

same dedication and education as a general education teacher. You should be understanding

and compassionate, yet firm. It takes a special person to be a special education teacher.
