Methodology
The main data we needed to collect in this investigation of stream velocity at each site
were, average rock size, cross section of area, gradient, wetted perimeter, Manning's N, velocity
mannings, hydrolysis radius and velocity.
To find the average rock size at each site, ten random samples were collected and
measured with a measuring tape. Then, to find the average, we used the formula:

sum of all lengths of rocks

Average =
total number of rocks , we then tabulated each site’s average. Also, by
making observations about the rocks at each site, we could tell which sites had higher or lower
channel roughness from the roughness of the rock.
The cross section of area was found by firstly, finding the length of the river cross section
at each site, then dividing the length in two metre intervals, and taking height measurements at
each interval. Then this information was used to divide the river into trapeziums. The formula for
area of a trapezium, ½ sum of parallel sides x perpendicular height, was used to find the
area of each segment, and then the area of all segments were added to find the total cross
sectional area of each sight.
Opposite
Gradient was found by using the formula Sin θ = Hypotenuse
, where theta, the angle of
elevation was found by using a clinometer, and the hypotenuse was given as 10.
The wetted perimeter was found by measuring the surface of the channel bottom
and the sides which are in direct contact with the water.
Velocity Mannings was found by transposing and executing the formula
R 0.06 x S 0.5
V= n

Hydraulic Radius was found by the formula HR = WCross Section

etted P erimeter
To find the velocity at each site, a distance of ten feet was measured, and a ball was
placed at the beginning of the ten feet and the distance it took to travel to the end was
recorded. This process was done approximately three times at each site and then for
each site the average velocity was found.
