Generations of Computer

1ST Generation computers (1940-1956)

 Use Vacuum tubes
 Memory was stored in magnetic drums
 Very big in size
 Large power consumption
 Heats up quickly
 Needs air conditioning
 Not portable and reliable
 Uses machine language
 Only solve a single problem at a time
 Input was based on punch cards

Examples
 UNIVAC
 ENIAC

2nd Generation of computers (1956-1963)

 Use Transistors
 Smaller then 1st generation computers
 Large power consumption
 Don’t needs too much air conditioning like 1st generation
computers
 Not portable and reliable
 Uses assembly language
 Memory was stored in magnetic core technology
 Still relied on punch cards for input
 Slower in speed

Examples
 IBM 1401
 Honeywell

3rd Generation of computers (1964-1971)

 Use integrated circuits
 Smaller in size
 Low power consumption
 Not so much portable
 Instead of punch cards keyboards, mouse and monitors were used
 Multiprogramming operating systems were used
 High level languages were used
 Needs air conditioning
 Costly

Examples
 IBM 360 series
 Honeywell 6000 series
 TDC-316

4th Generation of computers (1971-1980)

 Uses very large scale integrated circuits
 High level languages like c, c++ and Dbase were used
 Very cheap
 Portable and reliable
 Low power consumption
 Smaller in size
 Pipeline processing
 Don’t needs air conditioning
 Concept of internet was introduced

Examples
 DEC 10
 CRAY 1
 STAR 1000

5th Generation of computers (1980-Till date)

 Uses ultra large scale integration technology
 Based on parallel processing hardware and artificial intelligence
 All high level languages are used
 Very faster, reliable and portable
 User friendly interfaces with multimedia features
 Very low power consumption
 Have large storage capacity
 Use peripheral devices like card readers and printers

Examples
 Desktop
 Laptop
 Notebook
 Ultrabook
