Know what each group of colonies was known for 

 
Vocabulary to Know: 
Proprietor​ - someone who owns land or property 
Treaty​ - a peace agreement between countries or people 
Export​ - product sold to another country 
Import​ - product purchased and brought in from another country 
Mercantilism​ - government should limit imports but expand manufacturing 
and exports 
The great Awakening​ - A time when different religious ideas were shared and 
spread, and people began to develop their own feelings about religion 
 
Concepts to Know: 
Class system in the colonies -  
Upper Class (Gentry) - plantation owners, rich merchants, church leaders 
Middle Class - Shopkeepers, doctors, lawyers 
Lower Class - fishermen, farmers, indentured servants, apprentices 
Lowest Class - Slaves 
 
Roles in the colonies - **Main goal was working to survive 
Men - worked on the farm or at their job 
Women - kept the household and made goods for family use 
Children - chores to do, these got harder with age. Most left home at around 
age 12 to train at a trade. School was not as important as it is today 
 
Slavery - Slaves were used in all the colonies. The South had far more slaves 
because of large plantations. In the north, slaves worked in homes and 
businesses. Know how slaves were treated in the north vs. south and how 
they resisted. 
 
Colonists vs. Native Americans - Indians believed that people didn’t own land, 
colonists believed land belonged to them. Most conflicts between the 
natives and colonists were over land and settlements. 
 
French and Indian War - British fought the french and Indians over the ohio 
river Valley. Forts were built to protect land, and lots of money was spent 
to win the war. British colonists eventually won, but war was very costly 
and they were not allowed to settle the land they won from the french. 
 
Know these battles with the Indians in order: 
1 - Powhaten’s War 
2 - Pequot War 
3 - King Philip’s War 
4 - French and indian war
