2) Commodity piping components are defined as sizes 1/2" to 24", and cover carbon steel, low alloy,
and stainless steel materials, unless otherwise noted. The Piping AML does not apply to furnace
tubes, elbows and return bends, heat exchanger tubes, boiler tubes, modulating control valves, or
(engineered) automated isolation valves. Engineered "special" items need not be purchased from
Piping AML manufacturers, however listed manufacturers capable of making these items should be
given preference.
3) The Piping AML is an evergreen document. During the course of project engineering, procurement
and/or construction, updated versions of the Piping AML shall be made available to contractors and
vendors to avoid complications with suppliers that may have been restricted, placed on hold, or
deleted. Where an updated revision of the Piping AML has a project cost or schedule impact, the
contractor/supplier shall evaluate and notify ExxonMobil Project Management of the impact prior to
implementing any changes.
*4) Downstream Capital Projects are encouraged to use the Piping AML as the starting point for Project
Source List (PSL) development, while still recognizing the use of other supplier options that may
offer a cost effective alternative in some circumstances. Because of the different needs of various
ExxonMobil organizations and affiliates, there are some differences in the use and application for
Upstream and Downstream projects. Additional guidance for developing a Project Source List is
available on the QML SharePoint. For other users, use and application of this document is covered
in the Introduction and General Comments section of the Piping AML.
Deviations from the Piping AML are not permitted without explicit approval of the appropriate
ExxonMobil personnel. Inspectors are authorized to request removal of any non-AML product for
which prior ExxonMobil approval has not been given.

7) If there has been a change from the previous issue, the change will be indicated by an asterisk (*)
and printed in italics. Significant changes will be highlighted in bold. Revisions made after a revision
has been published but prior to the expiration date shown in the header will be additionally
highlighted in red. New additions will normally be provisional (printed in bold) until such time that
satisfactory ExxonMobil usage and experience is confirmed. Provisionally listed manufacturers may
be considered as meeting Vendor Experience Profile II (No ExxonMobil Experience or EM
Experience with Concerns) per the EMRE Projects Equipment Criticality Process.
Where a “HOLD” or “Deleted” is indicated after a manufacturer’s name, the product shall not be
used.
Where a “RESTRICTED” is placed after the manufacturer’s name, the product may be used at the
discretion of ExxonMobil, subject to additional technical and/or commercial oversight. Such
oversight may include additional testing, inspection and checks on manufacturing capability and
procedures.
9) Size or other qualification limits that may be shown for a listed manufacturer will normally be
removed after a period of 5 years. Acceptance of piping components (including valves) that have
been manufactured by an AML listed manufacturer more than 5½ years prior to the "valid thru" date
shown on the page heading is at the discretion of ExxonMobil and may be subject to additional
review and/or inspection.
10) Piping AML accepted cast valves may be restricted to certain foundry sources, representing
accepted sizes and materials. Where not explicitly stated, the existence of such restrictions or
additional foundry information is indicated by the symbol (●). Specific details on Piping AML foundry
source restrictions should be obtained directly from the manufacturer. When deemed necessary,
this information can be confirmed with the ExxonMobil Global Piping AML contacts (as listed on the
following page.)
11) The Piping AML is jointly published and maintained by the Mechanical Engineering Section of
ExxonMobil Research & Engineering Company, and the Mechanical Group of ExxonMobil
Production Company, and with global input from Area Engineering Offices, ExxonMobil Project and
Procurement organizations, as well as operating facilities.

The following AML valve inspection program is suggested for special order (non-commodity) valves, as
well as for all AML valve categories that include a note recommending order inspection.
The source of manufacture for the finished valve, as identified by specific location, must be in compliance
with the current AML. In addition, valves being provided from stock must not be more than 5-1/2 years
old, as older valves are outside the scope of the AML (see General Comments, Note 9.) The API 598
test report can be used as an indicator to verify this requirement.
2.1 Verify status of submittals requiring approval by the purchaser from Vendor Drawing and
"Documentation Requirements" document (if any) contained in purchase order package.
2.2 Verify material certifications and test certifications. Document acceptance of these records per the
applicable purchase specifications and/or industry specifications.
2.3 Verify PMI reports and compliance with Project PMI specification requirements.
2.4 Verify heat treatment as required by purchase documents, material specifications, and valve data
sheets as applicable.
2.5 Verify correct material was used in the fabrication of the valves per valve data sheets.
3.1 Dimensional verification should include face-to-face / end-to-end, OD and height of raised face,
number and diameter of bolt holes, flange thickness, spot facing and gasket seating surface finish.
4.1 Witnessing of API 598 testing (shell, closure, backseat) is normally not suggested for API 602
compact steel gate, globe, and check valves that are NPS 2 and smaller, threaded or socket-welding
ends. Suggested witness testing of other valves is as follows for each order:
a) 10% for all valves, less than Class 600, up to and including NPS 24 by manufacturer and type.
b) 10% for all valves Class 600 and above by manufacturer, type, material, size and class.

d) For all quarter turn valves with gear operators per a, b and c above, witness (100%) the API 598
or API 6D seat leak test with the final gear operator installed (not shop equipment).
NOTE: Witness testing of commodity type valves should preferably be done at a local valve shop.
If there are any failures in initial 10% sampling, an additional 10% of that line item should be selected
for witnessed testing. If any of the valves from that sampling fail on test, then the entire line item
(100%) should be witnessed.
4.2 Witness first operation of Positive Material Identification (PMI) testing, and random thereafter. Verify
compliance with approved vendor PMI procedure in accordance with the purchase specification,
including equipment calibration and operator qualification.
4.3 Witness stroking of motor or pneumatic actuators with final actuators, not shop equipment.
4.4 Testing of all valves selected for cryogenic testing should be witnessed, and include a Test
Certificate signed by the Owner's Inspector. Cold and cryogenic valve testing requirements are
normally included in the Purchase Order. Piping GEMS 3-43-2.2 provides guidance for sample
selection and recommended test procedures and requirements.
5.1 Verify that valve marking and identification is in accordance with specification and purchase order
requirements. Valve manufacturer tags should indicate trim specified in purchase order. Application
of nameplate should be verified on random basis.
5.2 Verify all valves are additionally tagged (stainless tag is recommended) with the stock code, the
ExxonMobil Piping GEMS Purchase Description Code, and the words NACE or FIRE TESTED as
applicable.
5.3 Additional identification of valves that have been witness tested in accordance with this valve
inspection program is recommended.
5.4 Verify painting/coating is in accordance with applicable specifications data sheets, and purchase
order requirements.
5.5 Packing/crating requirements including export packaging and marking should be verified on random
sample basis for compliance to specification and good practice.

The following procurement and inspection program is recommended for ”Critical Piping Components.”
AML pipe, fittings, and flange categories that include a note recommending order inspection, as well as
piping components that include an inspection clause in the purchase document, are considered to be
“Critical Piping Components.”
Purchase agreements for “Critical Piping Components’ shall be amended to include the supplementary
examination and test requirements contained herein. The Inspection program for critical piping
components shall be conducted in accordance with applicable purchase orders, specifications,
procedures, standards, drawings, etc. that are a part of the purchase agreement.
The source of manufacture for the finished component must be in compliance with the specific
manufacturing location listed in the current version of the Piping AML.
3.1 Specify Liquid Penetrant (PT) examination of stainless steel components after final machining and
prior to shipment. (100% per size / heat)
3.2 Specify Wet Fluorescent Magnetic Particle (MT) examination of alloy steel components after final
machining and prior to shipment. (100% per size / heat)
3.3 Specify ASTM A182 S1 (Macroetch Test) and S2 (Heat Treatment Details)
S1) (Note: The macroetch test may be waived by ExxonMobil for small orders and when considered
impractical.) A sample forging from each heat lot shall be sectioned and etched across the full
section to show flow lines and internal imperfections and demonstrate homogeneous, sound and
uniform material free from injurious laminations, cracks, hydrogen flaking, burst or other
objectionable defects. A “heat lot” is considered the group of components in a given order that
experienced the same heat treatment by being in the oven at the same time. The test shall be
conducted according to Test Method E340. The objective is to associate a finished part with test
results performed on material from the same ingot with the same heat treatment, or to associate a
finished part with results of a test performed on a sample from the same melt.
S2) The manufacturer shall provide a detailed test report containing the information required in
A182 § 18.2 and shall include all pertinent details of the heat-treating cycle given the forgings.

ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company
22777 Springwoods Village Parkway
Spring, Texas 77389
April 1, 2019
Attached is an updated issue of the Piping and Valve (Piping AML) section of the ExxonMobil Qualified
Manufacturer List (QML), valid through September 30, 2019. The most recent (controlled) issue of this
document is also available on the QML Sharepoint Site:
https://ishareteam2.na.xom.com/sites/QSLGSL/default.aspx
Piping AML listing means that additional inspection per GP 20-1-1 "Inspection of Equipment and
Materials" will normally not be required. This reduces overall cost for small quantities of material.
However, for larger projects, and for (valve) categories where order inspection is being recommended, a
suggested "Recommended Valve Inspection Procedure" is available. Likewise, for critical pipe, fittings,
and flange categories that include a note recommending order inspection, as well as for all piping
components that include an inspection clause in the purchase document, a suggested “Recommended
Critical Piping Procurement and Inspection Program” is provided.
Capital projects are encouraged to use the QML as the starting point for Project Source List development
while still recognizing the use of other supplier options that may offer a cost effective alternative in some
circumstances. However, because of the different needs of various EM organizations and affiliates, there
are some differences in the use and application of the QML within Upstream and Downstream. To
address those needs, all users are encouraged to refer to the Project Guidance document available on
the QML sharepoint site.
Use of the Piping AML is at the discretion of local plant management. Questions or comments regarding
the Accepted Manufacturer List should be referred to the appropriate project/site technical or inspection
contacts who can also provide qualification support for piping components not specifically covered by this
document. QML sharepoint access requests should be directed to the QML Administrator, as listed in
the "Contact Information" section on Page 4.
The Piping AML is for ExxonMobil use only. It is jointly maintained by ExxonMobil Research &
Engineering Company and ExxonMobil Production Company, with global input from all Area Engineering
Offices, Project and Procurement organizations, as well as operating facilities. Deviations to this list
require explicit approval from ExxonMobil. Inspectors are authorized to reject all non-conforming items
unless they have prior written notification that the specific item in question has been accepted by
ExxonMobil for that installation.
