This assignment will carry 10% marks for the final exam

A four – lane urban expressway has the following characteristics;

i. 11 feet lanes
ii. 5 feet clearance on the left side
iii. Rolling terrain
iv. A ramp density of 3.2 ramps per mile
v. Peak Hour Factor (PHF) of 0.85
vi. The traffic consists of 10% trucks and 6% Recreational Vehicles and all drivers are regular
users of the facility.
The peak – hour volume in the facility is currently 2200 veh/hr., which is expected to grow at a rate of
4% a year for the next 15 years.

1. It is required to show higher management the deterioration of LOS – C on expressway.

Hence, you are requested to determine the LOS in current year, 5 year & 10 year. Further,
calculate the exact year that demand reaches capacity. (Marks 04)
2. To maintain the expressway conditions, Management has decided to keep LOS – C for next
10 year period and they proposed the following two methods;
i. Increase the number of lanes OR
ii. Reduce the traffic demand by introducing a public transport system.
As an Engineer, you have to describe separately how above methods will affect to improve
the LOS without any calculations. (Marks 03)
3. List out the cost items will incurred on above two proposal. (Marks 03)
