Tutor guidelines

1. Create groups within the class of roughly equal numbers – would recommend
no more than 5 to ensure equal contributions in the group.

2. Provide each group with the scenario on page 2 below. Provide with mini
wipeboards and/or paper to record their selections and justifications on.

3. Explain the scenario and how they must justify their selections of the people
they wish to save. This can be done in two ways.

a. They can either discuss each person in turn as a whole group,

selecting and discarding as they go.
b. Each member of the group can take ownership of 1-2 persons
(depending on how many students there are in each group) and they
have to justify to their group why they should be allowed in the lifeboat.
This will encourage all learners

4. Ensure you set a time limit to compete the selection process. Why not put a
classroom timer up on the wipeboard? 10 minutes is a recommended time
allowance, however some groups may require longer.

5. Circulate around the groups asking them to state their selections and justify
who they saved but also why they did not save the others. You may wish to
record each group’s selections on the wipeboard to compare their selections.

6. Talk through the answers shown below on page 3.
