Teaching Tips: Fishing Line
Using this file
You are able to print and photocopy these pages for your
non-commercial classroom and home use.

Learning to work with numbers requires a good deal of repetition – playing games is a good way to make this
repetition fun and motivating!

This game will be very effective for a small group of students to play, after they have been
introduced to skip counting by 2.

Before students play the game, introduce the game pieces to the students and look at them together. Help them to
become familiar with the format and rules of the game.

Demonstrate to the students how to find the next number in the sequence by skipping a number.

Try to make learning experiences and game playing as fun as possible. The aim of the game is not to demand or
test the students’ knowledge, but rather to encourage and assist them in playing the game. Remember that the
more fun a student has the more times they will want to play – thereby engaging in the repetition needed to build
solid and meaningful understanding and skills.

Playing games will not only help your students’ mathematical skills but will assist them learning to co-operate,
concentrate, follow rules, engage with other people and perhaps more importantly win and lose.

Print and laminate the game cards. Cut them out and store them in a safe box, bag or file folder. Use the cover
page at the end of this file to help you sort your resources.

Students may like to record some of their learning while playing the game on the worksheet provided.

Purpose

Students will skip count by 2s.

Students will write numerals.

How to play:

Players sit in a circle, each with a game card.

Students point to the first fish and say the number. If possible, they skip
count by 2s, pointing to each fish along the line.

If needed they can use the mini-fish at the top of the card to help them
with identifying the next number.

Students then write the sequence on the fish line with a pen.

Ask students to complete 10 cards each before cleaning and returning to

a central pile. If time permits, students can work on another 10 different
cards and record some of them on their worksheet.
