MUED 271: A Professional Choice

Allotted Time: 15-30 Minutes

Peer Lesson Plan: Ukulele

Objectives

The student will be able to learn and identify parts of the instrument and their

functions. The student will learn how the pitches of the strings and how the strings and

frets are used together. The student will learn the position of chords (Cmaj, Amin, Gmaj,

Fmaj). The student will then use these chords to play two songs (“Riptide” by Vance Joy

and “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz).

Learning Tasks

-0-2 minutes: Learning parts of the ukulele and how to hold the instrument.

-2-4 minutes: Learning strings and how to change the pitch with frets.

-4-20 minutes: Learning the chords C major, A minor, F major, and G major. Practicing

transitions to each chord and strum patterns. With the learned chords, play “Riptide”

and “I’m Yours.” Parts of the Ukulele

-Headstock: The top of the instrument; holds one side of the strings and tuners in place

-Tuners/pegs: Changes the pitches of the strings in order to tune the instrument

-Nut: Holds strings in place

-Neck/Fretboard: Long piece connected the headstock to the body of the instrument;

contains the frets and fret markers

-Frets: Bars that when pressed, alter the pitch of the string by one half step each.

-Body: Largest part of the instrument

-Sound Hole: allows for the strings to resonate and create sound

-Saddle & Bridge: Holds the bottom end of the strings in place

-Strings: When played, the vibrations create sound

Strings and Frets of the Concert Ukulele

-String order: G, C, E, A

-Not from lowest to highest

-Frets are used to move the pitch by half steps

-One fret=one half step

-On the G string, if the first fret is pressed, it creates the pitch of G#

Chords

-C major, A minor, F major, and G major are very popular chords used in pop music, so

many different songs can be learned and played with these few chords.
