Objectives
The student will be able to learn and identify parts of the instrument and their
functions. The student will learn how the pitches of the strings and how the strings and
frets are used together. The student will learn the position of chords (Cmaj, Amin, Gmaj,
Fmaj). The student will then use these chords to play two songs (“Riptide” by Vance Joy
Learning Tasks
-0-2 minutes: Learning parts of the ukulele and how to hold the instrument.
-2-4 minutes: Learning strings and how to change the pitch with frets.
-4-20 minutes: Learning the chords C major, A minor, F major, and G major. Practicing
transitions to each chord and strum patterns. With the learned chords, play “Riptide”
-Headstock: The top of the instrument; holds one side of the strings and tuners in place
-Tuners/pegs: Changes the pitches of the strings in order to tune the instrument
-Neck/Fretboard: Long piece connected the headstock to the body of the instrument;
-Frets: Bars that when pressed, alter the pitch of the string by one half step each.
-Saddle & Bridge: Holds the bottom end of the strings in place
-String order: G, C, E, A
-On the G string, if the first fret is pressed, it creates the pitch of G#
Chords
-C major, A minor, F major, and G major are very popular chords used in pop music, so
many different songs can be learned and played with these few chords.
