STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Keeping in mind that my undergraduate programme is shortly about to be completed in the

coming few months, I realize that this is a crucial stage in my career where I should decide
the direction in which to move forward. I have a great interest towards the industrial work
environment and this is the reason I am looking to pursue graduate study. Added to this, are
the factors that there have been huge changes in Design engineering and global
industrialization in the recent times making the role of a mechanical engineer a very
indispensable one. Being part of this rapidly burgeoning community has been my deepest
desire. I pen down my Statement of Purpose with due reverence to the University and the
department.

In order to reach perfection at its peak, it is of utmost necessity that I consider studying in
Purdue University with its rewarding research program, excellent research facilities, and
highly suitable environment.

From my schooling times, I have shown very keen interest in the subjects of mathematics
and physics, which have enhanced my analytical and quantitative skills. These are my areas
of strength which have helped me very strongly in acquiring 93 % in my tenth grade. I passed
out of my senior secondary school with 98% in physics and 100% in mathematics. My overall
percentage in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry are 98.66%. In all of my academic
successes, my competitive spirit acted as a catalyst in me.

Given my love towards science and technology, pursing study in the engineering field was
almost like a natural consequence. To study the programme, I had to overcome many a
hurdle such as the common entrance examination which I had to take alongside thousands
of students. I passed the examination with flying colors. I took up Mechanical Engineering in
UNIVERSITY OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY (UET), LAHORE.
I chose Mechanical Engineering as my undergraduate major as I believed it had tremendous
potential. Throughout my undergraduate programme, I’ve maintained an excellent
academic record.

My undergraduate program has given me a wide and comprehensive exposure to numerous

courses that I found interesting- namely, Kinematics of Machinery; Engineering Graphics;
Design Engineering; Finite Element Analysis; Mechanics of Solids; Thermodynamics;
Robotics. I strongly believe in learning practically by doing; it is the hope of coming up with
path breaking results through experimentation that I find very fascinating.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

I took my study beyond just the four walls of my classroom- keeping myself occupied with
numerous industrial visits. This helped me get a closer look at the application of various
aspects of the subject. I presented ten technical papers at the national and state levels and
also took responsibility of organizing various cultural, technical, and recreational events. I
was elected the president of my Department, taking into consideration my leadership
qualities, communication skills, and performance. I was also an active participant from my
college for robot competitions.

During my undergraduate study, I was exposed to broad range of tremendous courses

focusing on the fundamentals of mechanical. Automobile technology and and Refrigeration
techniques in general have fascinated me throughout my undergraduate study.
During my program, I had the opportunity to do numerous projects. In addition to this, I
participated in an HPVC held in our institute in which I participated. As my 3 rd semester-
bachelor project, I designed & developed an electric Hover Board with 300 rpm revolving
gear DC motors.

During my final year of my bachelor’s degree, I undertook two projects – Human Powered
Helicopter and Simulation of Plume-Spacecraft Interaction. I was the project leader for both
of my projects and I learned how to overcome numerous practical difficulties in the
implantation of ideas and tasks- with limited resources. I successfully completed both my
projects on time, with the guidance of technical experts in my University.
Besides excelling in academics, I have always made efforts to involve myself in sports or
other extra-curricular activities to sharpen my mind and improve my concentration. Being an
ardent lover of sports, I enjoy playing Cricket, Soccer and Badminton in my free time. I was a
part of inter-school and inter-college Table-Tennis team and represented the institutions in
various tournaments at state-level.
In addition I have been a student member of the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers)
for the past three years.

My objective of pursuing an MS in Aero-Dynamics is to acquire an in-depth competence and

hone my intellectual ability in this engineering stream. Ten years down the line I envision
myself in the manufacturing sector. I would like to be able to apply what I learn to the
industry and contribute towards its development.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Since childhood, I have had an aptitude for mathematics, physics and logical reasoning and it
is for this reason I have consistently fared well in my academics. In fact, during my
undergraduate tenure, I have always managed to be among the top four students in my
branch and my GPA has been on an upward trajectory with every passing semester. My
liking and understanding of aircraft structures related subjects is reflected by my strong
performance in these subjects. I have successfully managed to secure an A grade in
Structural Mechanics, Flight Mechanics and Dynamics. Further I topped my class in subjects
like Finite Element Methods, Computer Aided Design, Aircraft Structures, Fluid Mechanics
and Computational Fluid Dynamics. My software skills are equally developed as my
theoretical knowledge, which is evident by my grades in practical exams as they have never
gone below ‘A’ grade in Structures, Propulsion and Fluid Dynamics lab.
With a deep interest in structures of aircrafts, a fair knowledge of simulation software like
CATIA, ANSYS and FLUENT, and academics to support my nomination, I am currently
selected for an internship by Pakistan Aeronautical Complex Kamra .

I have been studying in English medium institute since the very first day of my schooling and
the examination medium and the course of study has always been English. Also, I scored 7.5
band in IELTS.

Having spent most of my early childhood abroad and the rest in an international school,
English has become my primary language. Despite being fluent in my native language, Urdu,
I prefer using English most of the time, especially when it comes to studying. In terms of
academic interest, Physics is extremely interesting to me. With every lesson that goes by, I learn
something new, and the more I learn the more I realize how little I know. Things which I once
thought were simple are now very complicated. However, this simply makes the subject more
fascinating and intriguing. I love understanding how things work, and Physics does specifically that.
Physics is the never ending endeavour to question and explain the anomalies of the natural world,
and it is the one subject I would gladly spend the rest of my life studying.

As strong as my passion for Physics is, I also have an undeniable passion for Mathematics. I
have always been conflicted in what career path I should take, that was at least until I
discovered Mechanics. Mechanical Engineering provided the perfect solution for me, and I
knew that from the first moment I started learning it. Not only will I be able to integrate
Mathematics into Physics, I will also be given the choice of innovation.

The thing which made me choose Mechanical Engineering as my path of study is its
flexibility. There are infinite possibilities of what I could become upon mastering Mechanics.
Many people say Mechanical Engineering is difficult to learn, let alone master. If anything,
this only adds further temptation to the task.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

My decision to pursue graduate study in the United States is underscored by my desire to be

a part of the graduate program at your institution. Purdue University offers the flexibility
needed for such a vast and rapidly changing field. The research facilities and the faculty at
the university are par excellent.

It is a strong belief in my family that the American education system has the best to offer in
the whole world. This belief arises out of the experience that my parents had when they did
their Masters of Science in the University of Pennsylvania during the years 1967-69. If I can
get an opportunity to be a part of that intellectually stimulating environment, I am sure my
talents will be put to optimal use.

The American universities have always pioneered the research in my fields of interest. Being
a prospective student for new challenging ideas, I believe that an opportunity for higher
education in U.S.A. would be a unique fortuity to test and prove my ability and also to enrich
and broaden my keen with transition to a new setting. Finally, I would like to add here that
my parents have always been a source of inspiration to me. They have set me personal
examples and ideals for me follow. As a result of this, I believe that over the years, I have
evolved into a person who can fit easily into a team and who appreciates the value of
discussion and exchanges of ideas. I am largely self-regulated and am capable of
independent work, given an opportunity.

I find that your esteemed university with its world renowned high-tech facilities will be the
ideal and right place for my graduate studies.
I wait for your benevolent acceptance of my application so that I can gain admission in Aero-
Dynamics program.

Yours sincerely,
Abdul Rehman
