Week 1 This week was spent on idea generation

I have been asked to create two productions either a
short film, music video or stop motion, for a target
audience of either 5-12 or 25-40 year olds. I have
decided to create a music video and short film. The
music video has to contain a strong narrative, cut to
the beat and last the whole song. The short film has to
be between 5-10 mins, contain no dialogue, have a t
least 2 characters, a clear genre and can contain
music to create tension.
I have chosen the target audience of 25-40 year olds
as I believe I will be able to create a music video and
short film for that intended target audience as I will be
able to gather feedback and opinions from family
members as well as people I work with as they’re in
the target audience.
I have decided to create a short film and music video
for the target audience of 25-40 year olds. Both
productions will allow me to improve my camera,
editing and sound scape skills, as the short film can’t
contain any dialogue in it. I will also improve my
editing skills as most my productions last year could’ve
been edited better and I know have more knowledge
on how to edit to do so.
By creating a focus group, it has helped to gain
feedback from other in the target audience on what
they liked my ideas and what I could change or add
to make my ideas more appealing to the target
audience.

This week was spent researching target audiences
I found out what kind of things people from my target
audience are into, such as hobbies, interests,
occupations etc. I found out that people in the age
range of 25-40 year olds like to read, are active and
enjoy going out, most educated, prioritise family over
work, like to watch documentaries and worldly things
such as the news and prefer to shop online.
By researching primary and secondary research for
my target audience it has helped me to adapt my
idea so that it targets the audience more and also
contains things which I have learnt from my research
which will also show the audience who the
productions are targeted at which also allows them to
relate to the story line more.
By interviewing people from my chosen target
audience, it helped me to get their opinions on my
ideas and what they liked and disliked about my
ideas, it also helped me by being able to ask their
opinion on what I could add to make it target the
intended audience more. What helped me the most
was being able to find out if my ideas actually
targeted my intended audience and if it was realistic
as well as whether or not they would be interested in
watching something like my productions for their age
range.
Yes I found it quite difficult to get a large response to
my surveys, although I put my surveys on my
Instagram stories so that more people of that age
range would see it and hopefully fill out my survey, it
didn’t work, most people said they would’ve filled out
my surveys but they just didn’t have the time to with
all their commitments. A lot of my cousins were in the
age range and I also asked people I worked with to fill
out the surveys but again they didn’t have the time to
fill them out. I think if I made the surveys shorter more
people would be able to fill it out as they’d only be a
few quick and easy questions to fill out, this is
something I am planning on doing for my FMP to
insure I a large amount of responses.
The key things which I found out that I will include to
target my audience is to show the characters going
out rather than just staying at home, I will also show
them reading a newspaper as people in the target
audience like to read a lot rather than using
technology all the time. What makes this target
audience different to the I didn’t choose is that it’s for
a much older target audience and on which I
haven’t done so before which makes this interesting
as I’m having to research for an older target

This week was spent researching codes and
conventions
Both my short film and music video are romance
genre, the reason I chose this genre for this target
audience is because as an older age range they
would’ve experienced some type of romance as
they’re older which makes the genre more relatable
to the target audience. I also chose this genre as I felt
that with this age range they’re a lot more to do with
romance as they’d be going out with each other
getting to know each other and would meet on
realistic places such as a market or on a train.
By researching secondary research into both my
productions it has helped me to find out more on
what my genre consists off and what I will need to
include in my productions to make better. I also learnt
that by setting up the background and the
characters the audience will already be able to see
the atmosphere of the shot, before seeing the
character this is done by using lighting and body
language.
I will make sure I include loads of close ups to show
the audiences facial expressions as that’s what will be
telling the audience how the character is feeling as
well as having no dialogue I will be using facial
expressions and body language to help with telling
the audience what’s going on throughout the
productions.
The key conventions for my genre that I will include in
my productions are facial expressions, body
language, costumes and lighting, all these aspects will
help my productions fit the romance genre.

This week was spent researching codes and
conventions
By researching primary research, it has helped me to
gain a better understanding of what I will need to
include in both of my productions to get the narrative
across to the audience, I learnt more about the body
language of characters and how it’s a big part of any
production even though we may not notice them in
productions. I have also learnt that by changing the
lighting will instantly change the atmosphere of the
scene which can be to even change the atmosphere
for a short amount of time on screen.
I will be changing the body language of the
characters so that at the start of both productions
more so the music video as it shows the characters
were more reserved with one and another and how
throughout the productions they become more
comfortable with each other which will show the
audience how their relationship has and will continue
to adapt and improve over time, this will be shown
more in the music video as it will show how their
relationship changes overtime. Whereas in the short
film they don’t meet each other until right at the end
of the film but I will have them close together to show
that although they have properly just met they
already feel comfortable with each other. I will also
be changing the costumes of the characters more so
the music video so that their outfits complement each
other, and which will also show the audience that
their relationship has just started and how it continues
to improve throughout the video.
By sending out surveys for people to fill out about my
ideas for both my short film and music video it has
helped me to understand what other opinions are of
my ideas and take into consideration their opinions in
how to adapt and develop my ideas throughout the
planning and filming process.

This week was spent planning your productions
I learnt that by planning your day out before going to
film really does help with the filming process as it helps
make the process quicker and at ease. I also learnt
that by planning the route of the different locations
you’re filming as it really helps plan your day even
more as it allows the cameraman to organise the day

After reviewing footage, what do

so that the crew go to the further places first so that
they can work their way back around to the nearest
location to where they are so that they get to film in
all the locations at the right time of day.
This is will be useful ask my production continues to
make sure everything is filmed, edited and submitted
on time.
I didn’t encounter many issues whilst planning my
production, the only issue I encountered was actors
pulling out and having to find new actors and
changing my production schedule so that I could find
a day to film which worked with my actor’s schedules.
I overcame this issue by finding a new actor to play
the girl in my short film from work as the first actor had
to go abroad for an emergency, I then worked
around the days they were both able to film and
changed my production schedule to fit around this as
well.
I completed most of my production booklet outside of
class and completed my scripts in class as they’d take
up the most time.

This week was spent filming
I found the filming process good as I planned an
entire day to film for each. Since I had organised
everything well, it was easy to film my scenes and my
actors were very cooperative. I made sure to stick to
my production schedule and I had plenty of time to
re-film a scene if needed.
Some of the locations were extremely busy whilst I was
trying to film at them Trafalgar square, Southbank and
the ice rink at the history museum were very busy in
particular which made it hard to film as members of
the public got in my way whilst I was trying to film. I
overcame this by having to wait till it got quieter to re
shoot the scenes.
After viewing my footage if I had enough time for re-
shoots I would’ve re-shot some of the scenes and shot
them from a different angle so that there’s more
variation between the scenes in the shirt film. I also
would’ve shot more close ups of the characters hands

in the music video so that it shows the audience when
they’ve become a couple, it would also stand out
more amongst the other scenes, I will re-shoot this so
that it looks the way I want it to look.
I have tried to use more of my own soundscapes in
my short film rather than downloading most of them
from the internet. I have also tried using the editing
technique of having the messages pop up beside the
clips.
Yes, the locations I have filmed at are suitable for
both my productions as it’s the first time since last year
that I have widened my locations outside of Reading
and High Wycombe. Places around London really
helped my productions as they looked aesthetically
pleasing to the audience as well as being practical
for the narrative of both productions.

I still need to capture the scene of the girl in the short
film looking through the book at the pictures of the
various places around London in the book.
This week was spent filming
I found the filming process good as I planned an
entire day to film for each. Since I had organised
everything well, it was easy to film my scenes and my
actors were very cooperative. I made sure to stick to
my production schedule and I had plenty of time to
re-film a scene if needed.
The only problem I encountered whilst filming was that
it was pouring the entire day whilst I was filming for my
music video, I overcame this by focusing on the
Christmas lights at the locations, so that the audience
will focus on the lights and will divert their attention
from the weather of the production.
After reviewing the footage, I am happy with how the
shots came out, the only thing I was unhappy about
was how the rain ruined my shots in making them look
dull, I overcame this by changing the saturation and
exposure of the shots to make it look happier as well
as directing the audience’s attention to the
background and lights at the locations.
Yes, they have sort off turned out how I planned, in
my short film I changed the setting from auto to
manual and used the incandescent and fluorescent
setting so that it would change the colour and
atmosphere of the shot but it didn’t really work,
instead it would make the characters look darker and
take away from the main focus of the shot.

I am finding the editing process good as I had
planned what I was going to do each day whilst

Yes, adding more sounds underneath the sounds I
already have as well as changing the sounds so that
certain parts of the audio stands out more than the
rest. I am also trying out a new technique of adding
text to make it look like messages being sent on
screen.

I am finding the editing process good as I had

Yes, I am pleased with the outcome of my
productions as they have come out the way I
imagined and they also meet the target audience
needs.
My production meets my target audience as it
focusses on the characters going out and enjoying
themselves rather than staying at home all the time. It
also meets the target audience by in cooperating
being active in their everyday lives.
I think both my productions are well targeted to the
audiences, as they both include my findings from my
research of my target audience.

How did you choose to pitch your

I have effectively matched the codes and
conventions I researched previously in this unit, by
using the editing techniques I analysed it made my
production look better and target the audience
better as well.
I feel that my work is becoming like the existing
professional ones I have researched and looked at, I
think that if I varied my camera angles and had time
re shoot a few scenes I think this would’ve made my
productions look more like the professional ones I
looked at previously.
The camera angles of some of the shots taken, I
would improve this for next time by filming the same
scene from various angles so that I could use footage
from all angles in needed. I also would’ve used a
gimbal for some of the scenes the shots would’ve
looked smoother and more professional, next time I
will try and find one that I am able to use.
I have learnt that I will need to make sure I add in
detail more on my target audience research as I am
planning on doing adverts for my FMP, and adverts
would be based a lot more around target audience. I
have also learnt that I will need to make sure that I
have planned for things to not go to plan with my
actors and to not only have a back-up plan but to
also have another back-up plan just in case the first
back-up doesn’t go to plan.

This week you pitched
I chose to pitch my idea by using a presentation
created by myself. I chose to use this as I felt that it
was the best way for me to present my findings and
research in a professional and presentable way. I also
felt that this was the best way for me to help me in
doing my pitch as I’d be able to show the audience
what I have found rather than just talking about my
findings and research.
What made my pitch stand out was that although I
didn’t include many slides, but I was able to talk
about my research more rather than just talking about
the images from my presentation. My presentation

would convince someone to invest by interacting and
engaging with the audience at all times.
I feel that my pitch went well, I think that my nerves
got the best of me and caused me to ramble a bit
and forget parts of what I was saying and therefore
missing out vital information.
I would make sure I’m less nervous when next pitching
so that I don’t miss out information and therefore
ramble about certain parts throughout my pitch.
