Among all of the biochemists we have discussed, Frederick Sanger is the one who have

inspired me more in pursuing Biochemistry, not just because of his intelligence but also because
of his dedication in the field of Science which made him one of the greatest and most influential
biochemists in history. With that, it would be a pleasure for me to have a coffee with him if
circumstances permit and luck is on my side.

Frederick Sanger is the only person who have been awarded a Nobel prize twice in the
field of Chemistry. His achievements itself are testimonies of his contributions not just in history
but up to present day in our society. Frederick Sanger first studied about proteins which then
became a gateway to a new stage of medicine and biology as well. Also, as mentioned in our
discussion, Sanger was the first person who was able to reveal the structure of protein, which is
insulin which then became an important procedure for the laboratory synthesis of insulin which
is also used as an advancement in treating diabetes. This is just one of his discoveries which I
consider as an extraordinary achievement because my family is prone to diabetes and his
discovery is a big help in treating the said disease and it has also saved millions of people who
are also suffering with the disease.

Moreover, the thing that inspired me the most about Frederick Sanger is his humble
nature and modesty. He had stated in his autobiographical article that he was not academically
brilliant. Just like what he said in his Nobel Speech back in 1958, he advised those students who
happened to be his audience to “follow those dreams as far as possible and try and do that thing
that really interests you and you feel is really worthwhile.” With that, I can say that I don’t really
have to be smart to be good enough, all I need is to always remember why I am here and to do
more with what I love; and as long as I’m learning, the rest will come through and it will all be
worth it.
