MYSTERIOUS ILLNESS

Point of View

Passage from the story:

John was asleep and I hated to waken him, so I kept still and watched the moonlight on that

undulating wallpaper till I felt creepy. The faint figure behind seemed to shake the pattern, just

as if she wanted to get out. I got up softly and went to feel and see if the paper did move, and I

came back John was awake.

“ What is it, little girl? ” he said. “ Don't go walking about like that - you‘ll get cold.”

I though it was a good time to talk, so I told him that I really was no gaining here, and that I

wished he would take me away.

“ Why, Darling! ” said he , “ our lease will be up in three weeks, and I can't see how to leave

before.”

“The repairs are not done at home, and I cannot possibly leave town just now. Of course if you

were in any danger, I could and would, but you really are better l, dear, whether, you can see it

or not.”

John’s viewpoint:

I was sleeping, and then I wake up because I felt someone was there. I saw Jane doing

something strange and I asked her, “ What is it, little girl?” I said, “don't go walking about like

that you’ll get cold.” I noticed that she was scared. I don't know why. When I said that, I'm

worried for her because she looked very nervous. She started to tell me that she didn't want to

be in this house and she didn't like it.

Jane wants me to take her away from here. I was very confused, because she was very strange

and bizarre. I don't know why. I asked her, “Why?” “Why do you want to leave this house?”

I explained to her that we cannot leave this place because our lease will be up in three weeks

and the repairs are not done at home yet. I don't understand, “Why she doesn't like the house?”

My wife is better now. Jane are gaining flesh and color; her appetite is better. But I don't

understand her. So, when I told her, she put down her head and she looked sad and nervous.

I just watch her. Then I sat next to her. I want she feels comfortable, but probably she is getting

worse and I don’t know how I can help to her. I am very worried. Jane is invaded by her

nervousness, “Oh darling.”
