But there's so much to see in the parking lot (and most of these plants also grace beds in the paid- portion of the garden). Surely the parking lot pride of place goes to this Katsura tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) ‘where the Park meets the parked. The Katsura family is one of many ‘monocarpic’ families (ie. there is only one genus contained within it). Katsuras are native to Japan, and its wood is popularly used to make boards for the game of Go. P Below it, the orange-red hips of the Wood Rose (Rosa gymnocarpa), which is a southern B.C. native that, unusually, thrives in damp shade, and its hips are a useful food source for local fauna. Pe Across the lot, near the path to the Administration Building, is a Japanese Zelkova (Zelkova serrata), a member of the Elm family, with a beautiful textured bark (pronounced reddish lenticels) Its wood is considered the best for producing Taiko drums.
