SERVICE LEARNING INTERVIEW WITH AUNTIE:

GIA: Hi Auntie! As you know, for my service learning class, we were given the assignment to
interview a person who works in the career that I’m choosing. If it is okay with you, I will now
begin the questions. Which type of nurse were you?

IRENE: I was a medical-surgical nurse.

GIA: What does that job entail?

IRENE: Being a medical-surgical nurse entails taking care of patients that have medical
problems as well as surgical problems. I take care of them before they go to surgery as well as
after they went to surgery.

GIA: If you could go into a different specialty would you?

IRENE: No, I like medical-surgical nursing.

GIA: What was your favorite thing about being a nurse?

IRENE: My favorite thing is meeting new patients and taking care of them. Also, getting to see
them get well and go home. Especially if I had them more than one day in a row.

GIA: What was your least favorite thing about being a nurse?

IRENE: My least favorite thing was having a patient expire and having to talk with their family
after.

GIA: Why did you decide to become a nurse?

IRENE: Half was the fact that my mom was ill before I graduated from high school, and the
second part of it was knowing that it was her desire to become a nurse but she didn’t have the
opportunity.

GIA: What was one of the most important lessons you’ve learned from nursing?

IRENE: One of the most important lessons I’ve learned from nursing is to give back what
you’ve learned to others. In other words, help a new nurse and show them the correct way to do
things to ensure that they aren’t doing things just to get the job done.
GIA: Any advice for me as I start my journey of becoming a nurse?

IRENE: My advice for you would be to go with the flow. Keep going until you figure out which
specialty you think is right for you. In working in different areas you’ll decide what your fit is.
Good luck niece!

GIA: Thank you!
