Jesus in Philippians 2

There are four passages in the New Testament that describe the mystery of Jesus being
both God and man. One of those is Philippians 2:6-11, which reads:

6who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a
thing to be grasped, 7but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and
being made in the likeness of men. 8Being found in appearance as a man, He
humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a
cross. 9For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the
name which is above every name, 10so that at the name of Jesus every knee will
bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and that every
tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

This passage tells us that Jesus:

● Has always existed (v. 6a)

● Was in the form of God in eternity past (v. 6a)
● Was equal in every way with God the Father (v. 6b)
● Did not hold on to His equality with God (v. 6b)
● Emptied Himself by becoming a human (vv. 7-8a)
● Humbled Himself through obedience to God the Father (v. 8b)
● Humbled Himself by obeying even though it cost Him His life (v. 8b).
● Humbled Himself even by dying on a cross (v. 8c)
● Was exalted by God because He humbled Himself (v. 9a)
Jesus in Philippians 2

● Received the highest name: Lord (v. 9b, 11)

● Will have all angels, people, and imprisoned spirits bow to Him and confess Him
to be Lord, to the glory of God the Father (vv. 10-11).
