Begged Borrowed and Stolen Celtic Music Club of SA. Tunes INTRODUCTION BEGGED, BORROWED & STOLEN was conceived late one hazy night during a discussion on the limited availability of simple tunes for beginner musos. In a fit of idiocy, we decided to do something about it —so here it is! We haven't used the simplified versions, as we feel that some of the character and “feel” of a tune is lost if it is reduced toa simpler form. Where we had several versions of the one tune, we chose the one most usually played. Where we had alternate names, the most common was used Allist of alternative names will be found at the back Most of the tunes were, in fact, begged, borrowed or stolen from the South Australian Celtic Music Club, without whom we wouldn't be playing music now, and this book would never have been produced. Thanks, people! Our thanks also to a number of musicians around Australia for their sometimes unwitting (but hopefully not unwilling) help, encouragement, tunes and versions. We realise we can’t please everybody. We will probably have “incorrect versions” and “mistakes”. We would be delighted to hear from anybody with helpful advice, corrections, etc. Go to it. Good playing and have fun — that’s the most important thing. A NOTE TO GUITARISTS As this book was planned for musos beginning their celtic experience, the chords marked above each stave are as basic as we can make them without being deadly boring or killing the music. In some instances, alternative or additional chords are shown in brackets. (Usually where the option is just too good to ignore.) Remember there are only two rules for accompanying celtic music: a) The backing should express the feeling of the tune —the lilt. One guitarist in a group of musos can make the difference between a session being magic or mundane. b) There is no such thing as traditional celtic guitar backing! Therefore, whatever you want to try is legitimate if it lifts the tune. So don’t be inhibited by the purists, and do listen to some of the fantastic and yet simple guitaring showing up on disc these days —it will encourage you One final word; as soon as these*chords have led you into the music, build on them, embellish; use them as your starting point and move on from them.
