How Construction Differs From Manufacturing
Construction Manufacturing
Construction is a one-time unique effort. Manufacturing is continuous and produces identical products.
Construction involves a multi-disciplinary design and takes a long time to complete. The design is
sequential. Robust design should involve construction and operations staff, which is not always the case.
Scope control is difficult in construction. That means new scope can creep into a project. Clarity of a
construction project increases as project proceeds. In manufacturing, you have precise control.
Quality is difficult to control in construction. It is difficult to measure the cost of defects in construction.
Quality is dependent on the worker in construction. Construction is subcontracted and workers are less
trained. The use of computers for measuring, controlling and analyzing quality defects is less in
construction
Construction is difficult to plan and implement.
Construction employs more people. It is labor intensive. People have to move to the site. Manufacturing
is done in factories and is machine intensive.
