Chapter I: Introduction

Background of the Study

The natural dye/colourants are being used in textile since ancient age throughout the

world(Shamsul, 2013). Fabric dyeing is another way of dyeing clothes. A fabric dye is a coloring

material which can be used in clothes. Fabric dye is very important to humans because of the

countless advantages of dyeing which include not only being cost effective but are easy way of

transforming the fabrics to look new or to achieve color with desired color fastness(___,2015).

The Ceriops tagal is a medium-sized tree growing to a height of 25 meters (80 ft) with a

trunk diameter of up to 45 cm (18 in). The problem in the community is that some dye is not

affordable, seen in the locality, and durable. By means of durable, it will not stay longer than

expected. People nowadays tend to love their clothes if it has colors on it especially if it has many

designs. There is a study of Rhizophora mucronata and Ceriops tagal used as a dye of cotton and

silk. The barks of Rhizophora mucronata and Ceriops tagal were found to release color (Verenkar

and Krishnan, 2017). There is also a study of Swietenia mahogani used as a silk and fabric dye. It

is found high enough to utilize on fabric dyeing (Haque, Khan, Razzaque, Khatun, Chakraborty,

and Alam, 2013). Thus, there is no scientific study yet to prove whether it is durable or does it

really stays in the fabric.

The main purpose of the study is to test the capability of “tongog” as a fabric dye. “Tongog”

(Ceriops Tagal) is a mangrove tree species who’s bark has an extract which can be used in dyeing.
A.Treatments:

T1 (Tongog bark extract)

T2 (Commercial dye)

B.Statement of the Problem

This research will be conducted to test the effect of tongog (Ceriops tagal) bark extract as

an Alternative Fabric Dye.

Specifically,it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the average amount of dye removed (in grams) in the fabric applied with tongog

bark extract and commercial dye?

2. Is there a significant difference between the average amount of dye removed (in grams) of

tongog bark extract and commercial dye?
