METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study involves the procedure method including the control or the manipulation

of condition or purpose of studying the relative effects of various treatments applied to

test animals (Diano, 2012).

The procedures of the methodology includes the preparation of materials prior to

making the mosquito coil, grinding, of the ponkan peelings and coconut husk, mixing of

the ingredients, molding if the mixture, and drying of the molded coil. The experimental

phase assures to attain the needed data and findings, and possible cause-and-affect

relationships by conducting experiments to one or more experimental groups, gathering

data, and comparing it to one or more control groups not receiving the treatment without

bias.

The experimentation fallowed the Complete Randomized Design (CRD), which is

the appropriate design to assure the reliability of the experimentation and also to determine

the effect of the ponkan peelings and other included ingredients to Aedes aegypti mosquito.
Preparation of Materials

Organic mosquito coil out of ponkan peelings used different materials provided by

the researchers. The main material used is the ponkan peelings which is obtained from

some stores and eateries residing at Biñan City, Laguna. Damages or soon to perish ponkan

in the market was also collected for a cheaper price. Some ponkan peelings was collected

from the leftovers in few canteens. Adults Aedes aegypti mosquito was bought by the

researchers at RITM Alabang. The coconut husk which was also used in the making of the

organic mosquito coil was collected in some stores of coconuts for free. Cornstarch used

for binding was bought locally in the market while the mosquito coil used a ls a molder of

the mixture for the organic mosquito coil was also bought in the market. Other materials

like oven, weighing scale, blender, basin , and water are provided by the researchers from

their houses.

Setting of the Study

The researchers chose the place where the experimentation and testing was

conducted and completed in a time-bound manner. They produced a mosquito coil at

Jacobo Z. Gonzales Memorial National High School, Romana Subdivision, Brgy. San

Antonio, Biñan City, Laguna, Region IV-A CALABARZON.

The researchers' testing was conducted at DOST (Department of Science and

Technology) located at Los Baños, Laguna.

This study will be conducted during the period of June 2018 to March 2019.
Procedures of the Study

Peeling of Ponkan

In order for the researcher to peel the ponkan they used for the experiment,

the researcher bought first the ponkan from the market, they prepared it in the

table and started peeling the ponkan by the used of their hands.

Drying of Ponkan Peelings

The ponkan peelings is dried for about two hours or until slight brittle. Then

it is ready for grinding.

Grinding

The blender used for grinding is in the power 3. The ponkan peelings are

grinded using the blender until it is powderized . The coconut husk was blended

separately until it is powderized.

Mixing

After grinding, the ground ponkan peelings and the ground coconut husk

are mixed together as the base material. Next, the cornstarch is mixed with a little

amount of water and serves as the binder. Then, put the mixture in a basin and

mixed it thoroughly.
Molding

The researchers will mold the organic mosquito coil using an improvised

mosquito coil mold. The mixed material will be put on the space of the mold and

cover it using metallic foil.

Drying of Mosquito Coil

The molded organic mosquito coil is placed in an oven for 3 minutes

under a temperature 75°C. After it solidify, the organic mosquito coil it is dried

once again under the sun to totally dry the product before being used on a test for

gathering data results.

Experimental Design and Treatment

The researchers will be having four treatments, each treatment they make will have

3 replications of mosquito coil. The researchers will compare the burning rate of organic

coil to the inorganic mosquito coil and will be labeled as Treatment 1( T1). The researchers

will apply 50% ponkan peelings and 50% coconut husk to the organic coil and test its

efficiency, this will be labeled as Treatment 2 (T2). In treatment 3 (T3), the researchers will

test the efficiency of an organic coil with 60% ponkan peelings and 40% coconut husk.

Lastly, Treatment 4 (T4) is an organic coil with 67% ponkan peelings and 33 % coconut

husk. Each treatment will have these applications to ensure the efficiency of the organic

mosquito coil.
Statistical Analysis

This study aims to compare four different mosquito coil to identify which is the

best in terms of exterminating the mosquitoes. The researchers will use two-way ANOVA

(Analysis of Variance) test of significance to get the mean score of the four treatments.

Since the study has 4 dependent variables, the two-way ANOVA can examine the

interactions between these, which will lead to accurate results. Lastly, the researchers are

aiming to determine if there is a statistically significant difference among the four

treatment.
