UDO 621.645.4 SABS 1123-1977 (4s amended 1979 and 1982) SOUTH AFRICAN BUREAU OF STANDARDS STANDARD SPECIFICATION for STEEL PIPE FLANGES Obtainable from the S A BUREAU OF STANDARDS Private Bag 091 Pretoria Republic of South Africa 0001 ‘Telegrams: ator, Pretoria Telex + 3-626-SA COPYRIGHT RESERVED Printed in the Republic of South Africa by the South African Bureau of Standards SABS 1123-1977 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT ‘The South African Bureau of Standards wishes to acknowledge the valuable assistance derived from publications of the following organizations: British Standards Institution International Organization for Standardization NOTICE This specification was approved by the Council of the South African Bureau of Standards on 9 March 1977. BOS BY’S Manufacturers producing stesl pipe flanges to this specification may by arrangement with the Council of the South African Bureau of Standards apply the Council's standardization mark as illustrated above to their product as evidence to the consumer that the product is being made in accordance with this specification and that compliance with its requirements is ensured by tests and inspections carried out by the South African Bureau of Standards. This specification will be reviewed when necessary in order to keep abreast of progress. Comment will be welcomed and will be considered when ‘the specification is revised. Reprint incorporating Amendment N 1+ 22 August 1979 No, 2: 17 August 1962 ‘PREFACE This specification was originally prepared because of the discrepancies which existed between the thicknesses of flanges made in accordance with BS 10 and those made in accordance with BS 4504. The specification covers five types of flanges and, with the exception of deviations in the thick~ ness of flanges, follows closely the requirements of BS 4504 for the ranges of pressures up to 4 000 kPa and temperatures from -10 to +200 °C . Connecting dimensions, i.e. diameters, pitch circle diameters and drilling pattern, are in accordance with [80 2084 (the drilling of the flanges having been changed only to suit the preferred range of bolt sizes) so that the flanges may be connected to flanges made to BS 4504. ‘The pressure rating quoted in the specification is the maximum working pressure in the line. The test pressure for this type of equipment is normally 1,5 times the working pressure Because of the common practice of referring to a flange by reference to a table mmber, confusion may arise through the use of two systems of table reference, To overcome this possibility of confusion, the technical comuittee decided that it will be in the interests of the user and the manufacturer to adopt the approach used in BS 4504, Consequently, the flange reference tables in this specification have been designated Table 250/2, Table 250/3, etc. ISBN 0-626-06737-5 3 SABS 1123-1977 : COMMENDS COMMITTEE tee SECTION 1. Requirements that must be specified by the purchaser are listed in Appendix B. ‘DEFINITIONS For the purposes of this specification the following definitions shall apply: Acceptable, In relation to the standardization mark and to consign ment inspections carried out by the Bureau, acceptable to the South African Bureen of Standards, Defective. A flange that fails in one or more respects to comply with the relevant requirements of the specification. Lot, Not less than 20 and not wore than 1 000 flanges of the same material and designation, made by one manufacturer, submitted at any one time for inspection and testing. Pressure rating. The maximum allowable working pressure of an installation of which the flange is intended to be a component. Working pressure. The maximum pressure to which the installation of which the flange is intended to be 4 component will be subjected under normal working conditions. 1)Flanges used for the connection of pipes to a pressure vessel should comply with the relevant requirements of the code to which the pressure vessel was manufactured. 2)For flanges for use at pressures and temperatures outside these limits, and for those made of metals other than steel, see BS 4504. SABS 1123-1977 6 3 Bel 342 33 4. 41 4.162 TYPE, RATING, AND IDENTIFICATION TYPE, A flange shall be of one of the following types, as specified by the purchaser: e_ number 2 of " Welding neck 3 Plate, for welding 4 Screwed boss 5 Slip-on boss 8 Plate, blank PRESSURE RATING. The pressure rating of a flange?) shall be 250, 600, 1 000, 1 600, 2 500, 4 000 kPa, as specified ty the purchaser. TOEWPIFICATION, A flange shall be identified by its nominal size (DN), i.e, the nominal size (internal diameter) of the pipe with which it is intended to be used, and a designation that is used as the table reference and that consists of the mumerical value of the flange pressure rating (NP) in kilopascals followed by its type mumber (the two being separated by an oblique stroke, e.g, 25/2). CONSTRUCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS MATERIAL ‘A flange shall be made of easily veldable low carbon steel ‘the chemical composition and ical properties of which comply with the following requirements 4): a) Chemical composition Carbon, %, max. + 0,25 Manganese, % max. : 1,5 Sulphur, %, max. 2 0,05 Phosphorus, % max. 1 0,05 b) Mechanical properties Tensile strane (R,), MPa, ain, Yield stress (Ry), MPa, min. Elongation (A), %, min. 350 185 22 3)Based on design pressures applicable to installations subject to moderate shock such as may occur in well designed and efficiently operated boiler feed mains. Where a system may be subject to severe shook, it is the responsibility of the purchaser to make a suitable allowance when selecting the pressure rating of the flange(s). 4)Stecls that comply with the above requirements and with those for Grade 43A of BS 4360 or for Grade 26A of BS 1501, Part 1 or BS 1503 (as relevant) have been found to be suitable. Pressure/temperature ratings for flanges of various BS steels are given in BS 4504. 42 4.2 4.2.1 4.2.2 43 1 SABS 1123-1977 When 0 specified by the purchaser, the manufacturer shall make available to the purchaser test certificates covering the chemical analysis and the physical properties of all the steel from which the flanges in each consignment were made. ‘DIMENSIONS Except ae allowed in terms of 4.2.2 and 4.4, the dimensions of a flange shall, subject to the appropriate of the following tolerances, conform to the values given in the applicable of Tables 250/2-4 000/8 appropriate to the nominal size of flange specified by the purchaser: at © D Tolerance, mm Flange outside diameter, om Machined Not machined Up to and including 150 +1 42 Over 150 up to and including 300 1,5 #3 Over 300 up to and including 400 ze 4 Over 400 22 25 >) Tolerance on flange thickness, b Tolerance, mm Machined Not machined Flange thickness, mm Bele be Up to and including 35 41,5 8 0 -0 Over 35 +3 +5 -0 -0 ¢) Tolerance on welding neck length, hy, and boss length, h: +3 o—oeu_a”e°”eReeew»®« Oe 4) Maximum permissible eccentricity of outeide diameter, D, and pitch circle diameter, a, in relation to the inside diameter: Nominal size of flange Eooontricity, mm Up to 300 1 Over 300 up to 1 200 2 Over 1 200 5 Except when a raised joint face is specified by the purchaser, the mating face of a flange shall be flat.
