Dear Hiring Committee,

My name is Ryen Martinez, I am a sophomore at the University of New Mexico. I am applying
for the Civil Engineering Intern position that was posted on the NV5 careers web site. I believe
my experience and the skills that I possess are what qualify me for this position at NV5 as a Civil
Engineering Intern.
Growing up I have always had a passion for building things. Whether it be Legos, Lincoln Logs,
living room forts, etc. These things are what sparked my interest in construction and design. In
high school I took CAD architecture courses that introduced me to AutoCAD and different
architectural/construction concepts. I enjoyed creating the different architectural drawings on
AutoCAD and it motivated me to continue to learn more about design and construction. My
whole life I knew that I wanted to become an architect and ever since then that is what I planned
on doing, until recently that is. About a year ago, I was convinced into studying civil engineering
as an undergraduate. It was one of the best choices I made. So far in my college career I have
learned a lot about civil engineering and the different career paths that it has to offer. I am very
interested in civil engineering and am excited to continue learning more about it as I continue
through my college career. Design and construction have always been my passion, so this is the
perfect area of study for me.
During the summers of 2016 and 2017. I worked as an intern at the architectural firm, Woods
Design Builders. I worked on architectural drawings on AutoCAD and would do different
clerical tasks such as answer phones or make copies if needed. I have gained plenty of
experience with AutoCAD and continue to use it through college. When working on different
architectural drawing I had pay close attention to detail so that it would look professional. I had
to work with architects, drafters, and the contractor in order to perform the various duties that I
was assigned. This job has taught me how to be detail oriented, organized, and has taught me
what it is like work in the professional field of architecture.
From December 2017-July 2019 I worked at Flix Brewhouse as a Food Runner and in Drinkspo.
It is a fast-paced work environment that has shown me what is like to work under high pressure
and has given me valuable experience working with both customers and my coworkers. The job
was very fast paced and I had to adapt to difficult situations in order to perform my job well.
There have been many times where I have had to take a leadership position when doing my job
and I would often train new members of the team on how to carry out certain tasks.
I am currently working at UNM in the IT Academic Technologies department as a Support Tech.
For this job I answer phone calls and support tickets from people who experience technical
issues with UNM Learn. I troubleshoot these issues and walk them through the steps on how to
fix them. This job has given me customer service skills and has taught me how to trouble shoot
various types of technological issues.
Some skills that I have are: I catch on to new things quickly, I am detail oriented, I work well
with others, and I am very motivated to be successful for my career. I am confident that I would
make a great fit for this position. Thank you for your time and consideration. I’m excited to be
hearing back from you.

Sincerely,

Ryen Martinez
