Brianna Derrick Fall 2019 2nd Grade

Practicum Reading Lesson Plan

Objective:
Identify the sequence of events in a text. Determine text importance, such as signal
words. Use academic sentence frames to discuss strategies.

Standards Addresses:
RI.2.3, RI.2.10, RF.2.4a, W.2.7, SL.2.1a

Materials Needed:
A copy of the text for every student

Lesson Introduction:
“Today you’re going to practice reading and identify sequence of events in a text.
Remember to use what you’ve learned. You can determine text importance to help you
understand.”

Lesson Procedure:
Ask students to partner read the text and write down or underline the most important
parts. While students are working, go around and help them as needed. “What words help you
know when something happened? What happened first? What happened next? How do you
know?”
Ask the students to share their sequence and write it up on the board. Ask the group
what words helped them to know when something happened.

Differentiation:
For beginning ELL children:
Show children the reading early and explain some of the words used (if need be).
(ex. Grass, plants, compost pile, worms, dirt)
You can also point out some of the cognates so that they know how it translates.
(For Spanish: compost/el compost, pile/ la pila, plant/la planta, fruit/la fruta.)

Closure:
“Where have you seen a sequence of steps or events before? Why might game
instructions be written in a sequence? (or cooking) Why do directions show you steps in an
order?”
“Remember that many nonfiction texts require readers to identify sequence of events.
You can use what you have learned to help you identify sequence of events. You can also use
this strategy to help you understand other kinds of texts.”

Student Evaluation/Assessment:
Were the students about to explain what happened in the correct order? What things
might they have missed out on?
This is done while walking around and helping students. You can also collect their papers
and see what parts the students thought were important/ what the sequence was.
