Poetry Final Project

Context:
Over the course of this unit, we have studied many different forms, literary devices,
and sound devices that authors use to convey their meaning through poetry. You have
written many drafts of poems, experimenting with a variety of these techniques. You
have also had the opportunity to read a wide variety of poems by published authors.
Now you are ready to create your final poetry presentation to share with the world!
Task:
For your final poetry project, you will create a display of poetry:
Create a visually appealing display around the theme of your identity.
Your display will include:
o 2 – 3 original poems written by YOU
o Use 3+ of the forms we have studied (narrative, free verse, lyric, ballads, concrete,
etc.)
o Use 3 of the literary devices we have studied (metaphor, personification, simile,
symbol, etc.)
o Use 3 of the sound devices we have studied (alliteration, repetition, assonance,
consonance, onomatopoeia, rhyme, meter, etc.)
o 2+ poems published poems (written by other people, found in a book) that fit
around your theme (1 may be song lyrics – completely appropriate for school)
o Graphics/visuals to illustrate your poems and theme

You will also write 2 reflection paragraphs to accompany your poster:

o 1 paragraph that talks about your favorite form of poetry to write and why; your
favorite characteristic to use and your best example of it from one of your poems and
why; and your favorite sound device and best example of it and why.
o 1 paragraph that explains how your three published poems relate to your theme
and why you chose them.

Tips & Techniques:

 You will want to read through your notebook to decide which rough drafts of your
poems you would like to take to final form.
 You will want to review the different forms, characteristics, and sound devices
we've studied.
 You will want to review some examples of published/exemplar poems that we've
used in class.
 We will use the writing process: prewriting (gathering ideas), drafting,
conferencing and revising (improving your poems based on feedback), and editing
for publication

Due Date: Oct.10th.
