I had the pleasure to present with these awesome ladies at CMC math conference in Palm Springs!
Thank you for allowing me to grow with you Stephanie Erickson & Song Ye! Talk about iron
sharpening iron! These ladies sharpen each other by collaborating and finding solutions to help their
students learn math.

The ladies teach at Center Middle School where 1:3 students are EL students & newcomers. They
had to find ways to measure their students' understanding in math because regular formative
assessments did not work for their special population ( EL, newcomers, SPED, GATE & VI). Both of
the ladies are involved with Math for America (MFA). They meet with other people who are involved
with MFA once a month. MFA pays for the ladies to go to the math conference. Since they were
already going to MFA, I asked them if they would like to present with me at CMC. We put in our
proposal and got accepted to present. *

The two teachers were dabbling with Google classroom and built formative assessments using CPM
- Desmos activities, Red dot recording, & quizzez. Using these formative assessments allowed the
teachers to find the following three things: 1) the students understanding of math, 2) their
misconceptions, and 3) vocabulary. What they found was the most important tool was the Red dot
because this allowed the teachers to hear the students in all of the three areas above.

*Note: I paid for my own way to present at the math conference.
