there; I. 13; emphasis mine). If Andromache is forever present in
every reading of the poem by the poet's magisterial act of thought, the
real swan, as it is introduced after the spell-binding jadis , is controlled
by the absolute past, stronger than the preterite in English: 'je vis'
(I saw; I. 14).
Thus Andromache is the condition of the emergence of the image of
the swan. But she is also its effect, for when the poet most specifies her
by her kinship inscriptions, she is compared metonymically to the
swan in the words 'vil bétail' (vile cattle; the word has connotations of
breeding-cattle which would relate interestingly in making
Andromache the condition and effect of the fertilization of
Baudelaire's memory as well.)
Unlike the description of the predicament of the Woman as Qu
the Great Tradition, that of the poet's predicament is not made
shuttle rhetorically between the status of condition and effect.
29-33 ('Paris change . . . une image m'opprime' - Paris is changin
an image oppresses me) stand on their own. In fact we cannot b
what image oppresses the poet; he keeps the secret. The delicate
paratactic gesture of the colon with which the next movement opens:
'Je pense à mon grand cygne' (I think of my grand swan, I. 34)
certainly draws the reader into thinking that the image is that of the

In the longer work of which this essay is a part, I have developed the
idea of reading by interception of the text as it flies from implied
sender to implied receiver by animating the perspective of the 'native
informant', roughly as follows:
The clearing of a subject-position in order to speak or write is
unavoidable. One way to reckon with this bind is an interminable pre-
occupation with the (autobiographical) self. If we are interested in a
third-worldist criticism, however, we might want to acknowledge that
access to autobiography, for whole groups of people, has only been
possible through the dominant mediation of an investigator or field-
worker. The 'autobiographies' of such people have not entered the
post-Enlightenment European 'subjective' tradition of autobiography.
They have gone, rather, to provide 'objective evidence' for the
'sciences' of anthropology and ethnolinguistics. 'Oral history', coming
of age in the sixties, tried to efface or at least minimize the role of the
investigator. Much third-worldist feminist work has taken on this task
of the effacement of the investigator in works typically entitled '

Let us look briefly at the document from the East India Company.
(Although a commercial company, between the end of the eighteenth
and the middle of the nineteenth centuries, the East India Company
governed its possessions in India. We are therefore reading about the
employment of Indians in their own government.) The language here
is so explicit that not much analytical effort is required. Let me tabulate
the points I would emphasize. This document reflects an attempt, in
the interests of efficiency, to revise racial discrimination based on
chromatism, the visible difference in skin colour. (Chromatism seems
to me to have something like a hold on the official philosophy of US
anti-racist feminism. When it is not 'third world women', the buzz-
word is 'women of colour'. This leads to absurdities. Japanese
women, for instance, have to be re-defined as 'third world'. Hispanics
mirst be seen as 'women of colour'. And post-colonial female subjects,
women of the indigenous elite of Asia, Africa, Arabia, obvious
examples of the production of Ariel - if Prospero is the imperial
master - are invited to masquerade as Caliban in the margins.)25
The standards being applied in the document to legitimate racial
discrimination show that both the native male and the native female
are clearly inferior to the European female. Indeed, as in 'William the
Conqueror' and the classroom reaction to it, sexual difference comes
