President Daniels speech

Welcome to Purdue University. We’re happy to have you here for what we hope is the

beginning of another historic moment for Purdue. This university helped educate the first man to

walk on the moon, Nobel Prize winners, and inventors. Our students and alumni take the skills

they learned at Purdue and use that knowledge to help expand a variety of fields. We keep

moving forward as we accomplish new goals and keep motivating ourselves to break boundaries

and expand our horizons. It is our hope, that we continue with this path and ensure the work we

are doing always has a positive impact. With this in mind, we’re happy to announce one of the

newest achievements to take place at Purdue University.

Recently, the Purdue Center for Cancer Research has been working with the Cancer

Center for Western France. Together we’ve discovered that the primary ingredient in herbicides

can lead to mammary cancer. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their

lifetime, that’s more than 200,000 cases per year in the US alone. It’s our hope that by breaking

down what causes cancer, we can take a step to finding a cure for this disease. Cancer has

touched so many lives, and caused so much pain, it’s important that we continue this research

and do as much as we can to fight it. We are motivated to take the data we have already gained

from this study and move forward in hopes that someday we can work together on finding a cure.

After witnessing first-hand the excellent work these women have achieved in partnership

with Purdue University, it is my honor to welcome the lead scientists in this study, Lelièvre and

Gwenola Bougras-Cartron from the Cancer Center for Western France.
