Instrument:​ Bass

Objective:​ Student will learn to hold the bass and bow and play from do to sol in a D major
scale

Procedure:
1. Student will open case and get out bass.
2. Instructor will explain the names and parts of a bass if needed.
3. Student will adjust end pin and bow tightness to appropriate levels.
4. Student will pick up bass and instructor will help create the appropriate stance, posture,
and hand positions to play the instrument.
5. Student will finger and pluck do to sol in D major.
6. Student will put down the bass and pick up the bow.
7. Instructor will discuss, demonstrate, and place the bow hold.
8. Student will practice several bow strokes in the air without the instrument.
9. Student will pick up the instrument and use the bow to play do to sol in D major.

Assessment: ​Is the student able to play do to sol in tune with the bow?

Standards of Learning: ​This lesson will focus on High School Beginning Instrumental
standards for string playing according to the state of Virginia’s standards of learning. (HIB.10)
