Evaluation: Initial ☐ Unit 3, Intermediate: ☒ Final ☐
Delivery Environment of the activity:
Evaluative score of the activity: 130
Monitoring and evaluation environment
Starting date of the activity: Deadline of the activity:
November 02, 2019 November 28, 2019
Competence to develop:
The student applies the concepts of physics and electromagnetism, to determine the
parameters of electromagnetic wave behavior when propagated in guided media, using
mathematical methods to solve application exercises.
Topics to develop:
- Lines of transmission.
- Electrical parameters in transmission lines.
- Propagation in bounded transmission lines.
- Smith's letter.
Steps, phases of the learning strategy to develop
This activity called “Step 4”, is individual and collaborative, for its development you must
follow the 6 acts presented below:
Act 1: Explore the academic resource "Propagation of waves in open media" described
at the beginning of the "Activities to develop" section of this document.
Act 2: Download the “Annex 4 - Delivery format - Step 4” found in the collaborative
learning environment in the "Activities guide and evaluation rubric - Step 4 - to
analyze the waves behavior in guided mediums and radiation" folder.
Act 3: Individually, based on the exploration carried out, answer the 4 questions proposed
in the next section "Activities to develop".
Act 4: Individually, based on the exploration performed, solve the 3 proposed application
exercises, you must show the procedures performed.
Act 5: Each student must complete the application in its individual delivery format, verifying
the requirements of the evaluation rubric.
Act 6: In the 2 days, before the closing of the activity, the group leader must gather the
delivery formats of each student and compress in a single file, which must be delivered in
the Monitoring and Evaluation Environment.

Activities to develop
For the development of this activity, explore in the Knowledge Environment, in Unit 3, the
bibliographical reference of Chen, W. (2005), on pages 525-551, Joines, W., Bernhard, J., &
Palmer, W. (2012), on pages 23-45 and supplement with the aids generated by the tutor
within the forum, to solve the following consultation and application exercises:

Questions: (write with your own words)

1. What do you understand by transmission line? Mention some types.
2. What is a bounded transmission line?
3. Define the following electrical parameters of transmission lines:
a. Input impedance 𝑍𝑖𝑛 .
b. Stationary wave ratio 𝑉𝑆𝑊𝑅.
c. Physical length 𝐿 and electrical length 𝓁.
4. What is the purpose of Smith's Letter in the study of the propagation of waves?

Application exercises:
For the development of the following exercises, note that 𝐺𝐺 = 43 corresponds to the group
number and 𝐶𝐶𝐶 = 105 to the first 3 digits of the identification number.

1. A coaxial line has the following characteristics:

Geometric parameters: 𝑎 = 0.35𝑚𝑚 𝑏 = 30𝑚𝑚 𝑡 = (𝐺𝐺 + 10)𝜇𝑚
Conductor properties: (conductivity) 𝜎𝑐 = 5.8𝑥107 𝑆𝑚/𝑚
Properties of the insulator: 𝜎𝑑 = 1𝑥10−16 𝑆𝑚/𝑚 𝜖𝑟 = 2.25 𝜇𝑟 = 1
Applied signal frequency: 𝑓 = 105 𝐾𝐻𝑧
a. Calculate the electrical parameters R L C G.
b. Using the distributed model, calculate the propagation parameters 𝛼, 𝛽, 𝛾 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑍0 .
c. Calculate the propagation velocity 𝑉𝑝 , the wavelength 𝜆 and the attenuation 𝛼𝑑𝐵/𝐾𝑚 .

Figure 1: Geometrical parameters in coaxial line.

2. A 𝑍𝑜 = 50Ω lossless transmission line has a 𝑍𝐿 = 45 − 𝑗75Ω. If it is 𝐺𝐺 = 43 𝑚 long and

the wavelength is 𝐶𝐶𝐶 = 105 𝑚𝑚. Find and probe with the smith chart:
a. Input impedance 𝑍𝑖𝑛 .
b. Reflection coefficient Γ (magnitude and phase).
c. VSWR.

Figure 2: Graphic representation of the transmission line.

3. Bearing in mind that Smith's letter is used to determine parameters of the transmission
lines, use the "Smith 4.1" software found in the practical learning environment to check
the results obtained in point 2.
a. Input impedance 𝑍𝑖𝑛 .
b. Reflection coefficient Γ.
c. VSWR.
d. Find an electrical length 𝓁 where the input impedance 𝑍𝑖𝑛 is real.

Collaborative:
In the 3 days before the closing of the activity, students must present
their final individual work in pdf format in the Step 4 forum.
The leader must take the final works of each student and generate a
compressed file .rar or .zip with the name Step 4 and deliver it in the
Monitoring and evaluation environment in the Step 4 space.

The APA standards are the most used style of organization and
presentation of information. These are published under a manual that
allows you to have access to the ways in which a scientific article should
Use of be presented. Here you can find the most relevant aspects of the sixth
references edition of the APA Standards Manual, such as references, citations,
preparation and presentation of tables and figures, headings and
seriation, among others. You can check how to implement them by

In the agreement 029 of December 13, 2013, article 99, the mistakes that
infringe upon the academic order, among others, are the following:
paragraph e) “To plagiarize is to present as your own work the whole or
part of a writing, report, task or document of invention performed by
another person. It also implies the use of cites or lack of references, or
Plagiarism includes cites where there is no coincidence between them and the
policy reference” and paragraph f) ”To reproduce, or copy for profit, educational
resources or results of research products, which have intellectual rights
reserved for the University”.
The academic punishments that the student will face are:
a) In case of academic fraud proved in the academic work or evaluation,
the score achieved will be zero (0.0) without leading to disciplinary
measures.
b) In case of plagiarism proved in the academic work of any nature, the
score achieved will be zero (0.0), without leading to disciplinary
measures.
