AIM

PRECAUTION
1.Only bright shining nails should be used.

2.Nails in the dish must have appreciable distance

between them.

3.Do not pour too much of gelatin solution otherwise

patches will be difficult to visualize.
INTRODUCTION
Optics is the branch of physics that deals with the phenomenon of
lights i.e. reflection, refraction, etc. The optical instruments are the
devices which help human eye.

(1.) In observing highly magnified images of tiny objects for detailed

examination

(2.) In observing vary far off objects- terrestrial or astronomical.

Microscope and Telescopes are common example of optical

instruments. The essential optical components of these instruments are
lenses & mirrors. The images are formed by reflection of mirror &
refraction of lense. In dealing with study of optical instruments, we
shall continue to use the ray approximation be assume that light travels
in straight lines. So optical instruments belong to the field of ray optics
or geometric optics.
PRINCIPLE
When object is at infinite then parallel rays from object
come to convex lens and formed its image at focus
which is diminished. Similarly, when diminished object
is at focus then image is large at infinite formed by
Convex lens.
CONSTRUCTION
🌍 Astronomical telescope consist of two convex lens.

OBJECTIVE LENS:

A convex lens of large aperture & large focal length is to be

used for objective lens. Its aperture’s large because it receive
large amount of light coming from object.

EYE LENS:

A convex lens of small aperture and small focal length. Its

aperture is small because all light after refraction from this lens
enter completely in our eye.
The two lenses are mounted co- axially at the free ends of two
tubes. The distance between these can be adjusted using a rack-
and pinion arrangement.
WORKING
(A) IN NORMAL ADJUSTMENT OF TELESCOPE THE FINAL
IMAGE IS FORMED AT INFINITY

A parallel beam of light from an astronomical object like stars,

sun, moon (at infinity) is made to fall on the objective lens of the
telescope.

It forms a real, inverted and diminished image A'B' of the object

at focus of objective lens(Fo).

The eye lens is so adjusted that A'B' lies just at the focus of the
eye piece i.e. (Fe).

Therefore a final highly magnified image is formed at infinity.

The final image is erect w.r.t. A' B' and is inverted w.r.t. the
object.
(B) WHEN THE FINAL IMAGE IS FORMRD AT THE LEAST
DISTANCE OF DISTINCT VISION FROM THE EYE.

A parallel beam of light from the astronomical object is made to

fall on the objective lens of the telescope.

It forms a real, inverted and diminished image A'B' of the object

at focus of objective lens (Fo).

Now the light comes to our eye and we observed the image
beyond the focus of eye lens (Fe)which in inverted and large.
APPLICATIONS
(1)We use this telescope to examine astronomical object.

(2) We use this telescope to find out any new disturbance on

space.

(3) We use telescope to see comet and other activities of

planets.

🌍 The largest objective lens in use has a diameter of 40 inch (-

1.02m). It is at the Yerkes observatory in Wisconsin, U.S.A. Such
big lenses tend to be vary heavy & therefore difficult to make
and support by their edges.
