In Top Hammer Drilling the hammer produces a percussive force on the drill rods or tubes, which is
transmitted to the drill bit.
Top-hammer drilling machines are normally used in medium to hard rocks and for hole diameters up to
230 mm. Top hammer drills include:
The energy produced in a percussive rock drill is transmitted to the rock by a piston in the drifter via a drill
steel and a drill bit. When the stress wave reaches the drill bit, the energy is transmitted to the rock in the
form of bit penetration.
The piston strikes a shank and the impact energy is transmitted to the drill steel in the form of a stress
wave. The stress wave travels at a speed of 5200 m/s. When integral steels are used, the piston strikes
directly on the shank of the rod. For longer steels, the piston strikes a shank adaptor.
Impact energy multiplied by impact frequency together create the percussive output of the drifter.
Pneumatic drilling 1600 to 3400 hits/min Hydraulic drilling 2000 to 4500 hits/min
hand held rock drills (jacklegs, sinkers, stopers)
light drills mounted on a feed device and boom for tunneling (jumbos)
medium to heavy crawler based or wheel based drill rigs with boom or mast, feed, and drifter.
A down-the-hole drill, usually called DTH by most professionals, is basically a mini jackhammer screwed
on the bottom of a drill string. The fast hammer action breaks hard rock into small flakes and dust and is
blown clear by the air exhaust from the DTH hammer. The DTH hammer is one of the fastest ways to
drill hard rock. Now smaller portable drillcat drilling rigs with DTH hammers can drill as fast as much
larger truck rigs with this newer technology.

Rotary head
Is the part of a Drilling machine that provides the rotation, it could be a hydraulic or an electric motor
and rotation often vary from 0 to 120 rpm. Other definitions establish that a rotary head is a rotating,
low pressure sealing device used in drilling operations utilizing air, gas, or foam (or any other drilling
fluid whose hydrostatic pressure is less than the formation pressure) to seal around the drill stem above
the top of the BOP stack.
ShockSub
It is an impact and vibration reduction tool. These component helps to absorbs and dampens the
variable axial dynamic loads produced by the drilling works. It is most beneficial when drilling in hard
rock, broken formations, and intermittent hard and soft streaks. Reducing the impact loads helps to
increase ROP; improve borehole quality; and extend the life of the cutting structure, bearings,
connections, and surface equipment.
Pipe
A pipe, is a steel or aluminum alloy piping used on drilling rigs. It is a hollow pipe to allow drilling fluid to
be pumped down the hole to clean de dust and reduce the possibilities of a stuck.
BitSub
Bit Sub usually with two box connections, that is used to connect the bit to the drill string.
Tricone Bit
The tricone bit has three roller cutter cones with a series of teeth that crush rock on the rock face as
they roll over the face.

“The following standards for calculating the parameters of a blast pattern are first approximations, or
rules of thumb.
To use this method of design a blasting pattern, the explosive’s diameter must be known, and a “burden
ratio” corresponding to the type of rock to be shot and the type of explosive used must be selected.
Equations 11.3 through 11.7 provide the necessary values for the blast pattern.
