The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 requires head protection to be

worn where there is a risk of head injury.

EN397
Specifies the physical and performance requirements for industrial safety helmets. The pri-
mary purpose of safety helmets is to protect the wearer against head injury caused by falling
objects. They offer the maximum head protection.
To meet with the requirements of this certification, helmets must pass a series of tests. These
include impact resistance and penetration resistance, as well as design requirements for head
coverage and wearer field of vision. Chin strap anchorage is also tested when applicable.
EN812
Sets out the requirements for bump caps. These are intended to protect against minor bumps
and scrapes caused by low ceilings or hanging objects in the workplace. They do not protect
against falling objects or major impacts.
Helmets should be replaced every 5 years while those in regular use may need to be
replaced as frequently as every 2 years.
Excessive wear and tear will drastically reduce helmet performance. If a helmet is cut or badly
scratched, it should be discarded immediately.
