The Rhoda Institute's prayer time calculations are made based on
the method of the Union of Islamic Organizations of France (UIOF). Our teachers came to this decision based on observing the signs of the twilight period in Ottawa relating to dawn (Fajr) and dusk (which precedes Isha). They found that the calculations that the UIOF uses coincide more closely with these signs than other methods. Accordingly, Fajr starts when the sun is 12 degrees below the horizon before sunrise and Isha when the sun is 12 degrees below the horizon after sunset. The 12 degree mark also coincides with ‘nautical twilight.’ When the sun is below the horizon at this angle, you can distinguish the line of the horizon when out at sea in clear conditions. The other methods use a 15 degree calculation - making Fajr start earlier and Isha start later in comparison to the IOF method we follow. We also follow the Hanafi calculations for Asr. Our iqama timings are set with the intention of facilitating prayer in congregation as much as possible.
