The objectives of the assignment was to create a trailer, propaganda video, or infomercial that illustrates aspects
of a dystopian society. In order to successfully produce this assignment, the first step was choosing a dystopian element of
our society (my group chose surveillance and the power of technology) and creating a future in which the problem is
amplified. The next step was developing a full plot or product that displayed the dystopian elements, and then writing a
two column script. In the production phase of the project, we filmed the different shots we had chosen in our script. The
post-production process included finding archival footage, editing the footage, and adding textual and visual effects. My
goals for the assignment was to improve my editing skills, have a creative and entertaining final product, and work well
with my team.
The skills required to complete this project include creativity, collaboration, editing, and audio production.
Creativity was an important skill in this project because it helped my group when developing our plot and script. It
enabled us to have new ideas that would result in a fun-to-watch video. Collaboration was also an important aspect in the
success of our project. In order to accomplish the goals and objectives, we had to divide up work and work together
smoothly. Editing skills also played a big role in our infomercial by helping me contribute to the group and putting
together all the work we did in writing the script and filming the project. Finally, audio production was extremely
important in producing a professional and high quality video.
In order to make the message of our project more clear, we used text effect, propaganda techniques, and
supporting B-Roll to help the audience better understand the plot and ideas behind our finished infomercial. The text
effects helped to emphasize the “infomercial” setting. The clear propaganda techniques, such as testimonial, glittering
generalities, and card stacking played a large role in displaying the dystopian aspects of the society and product we
created. Finally, the b-roll we filmed showed the product in many ways and allowed viewers to visualize how it functions.
These ideas helped us improve our communication. The skills and ideas I learned during this assignment will help me
during future projects because it improved my audio production, editing, and collaboration skills. Dividing up the work
and being a part of a group played a major role in the execution of our project. The production and post-production skills
such as audio production and editing will help me in other film projects by improving the overall quality of videos. I
learned and developed many of my skills during the Dystopian Infomercial project that will assist me on future
assignments.
